Eastern Rosella behaving oddly.

ERs are regular visitors in the reserve across the road, both in the trees and foraging in the groung cover.

When I spotted this guy yesterday, at the base of a tree on the far side of the reserve, I couldn't work out out what he was doing.  Having a dust bath, or trying to dig something up?

Either way, he's really throwing himself into it.

That certainly looks strange. Looks like an itch you cannot scratch.

Very droll, Woko.

But yes, I did suspect some sort of parasite.  That is why birds have dust bathes.

Very strange.

"That is why birds have dust bathes"  You learn something every day Dmenace as I did not know that.

Hi Devon,

I remember my father telling me that when I asked why our chooks liked rolling in the dirt.

I just did some research.  Apparently it's a combination of controlling parasites and maintaining the plumage by helping to distribute the oil from the uropygial gland.

Territorial scent marking has also been suggested, but that strikes me as a much more mammalian sort of behaviour.

Cheers, Denis.
