In order to survive and thrive in our gardens, birds need:
- Complex garden structure: a good mixture of plant types to provide a high volume and variety of food, dense thickets for shelter and nest sites or materials for small birds.
- Chemical-free environment: to maintain a high diversity of insect and bacterial life in gardens, providing food for birds as well as promoting healthy soils.
- Thick leaf litter or mulch: encourage worms, insects and grubs to thrive, providing birds with food and improving the soil at the same time.
- Fresh water: to drink and bathe in.
