Hello from Perth Hills

Hi All,

Firstly, thank you so much for all the amazing photos and generously shared information. Reading through just some of your posts has been a joy. I'm never going to achieve the incredible results that some of you seem to manage with such regularity, but I'm hoping to make some definite improvements in my technique over the next year. Actually, that should say "acquire something vaguely like a technique intead of just snapping away on Auto!".

I live on a 4.5 acre bush block in the Perth Hills. It's been left partly as raw bush and partly parkland cleared (for fire safety and also to improve the very crowded look that coppiced re-growth can have.) We have also planted a modest 'native bird friendly' garden.

We have a variety of 'regulars' such as magpies, 28s, galahs, bronzewings, kookaburras and red capped parrots, plus a variety of small birds that never seem to stay still long enough to get their photo take or be identified. Although we do seem to have some pardalotes. Also seen butcher birds, wattle birds, corellas, the occasional goshawk and wedgetailed eagle, etc. I'm not really a Twitcher or 'proper' birder, but more of a Happy Snapper of the antics of our locals.

Cheers, Chris.

And now to see if I can figure out how to post a photo. This one was taken yesterday, a few metres from our house. Nothing special, but about as good as I can currently get with my limited range of skill and experience. The file is about 120k so should fit the rules, I hope.

Hi Chris and welcome. This forum is about everyone sharing, and you posting YOUR BEST or even some possibly not your best photos. It is not a competition.

One way to improve the quality of your posts, is to use a 3rd part host such as Flickr, this enables you to upload links to higher quality (larger files) photos. AnnieJ posted the link below, giving a tutorial on how to post using Flickr. Anyway, look forward to seeing more of your work. Sounds like you have a nice property, and lots of variety to practice with.

Unfortunatley I don't post much, I don't get much time for Birding, but I absolutley love admiring the work of everyone here.

Look forward to more of you photos.

Thanks for the welcome dwatsonbb. smiley

I'll have to look into Flickr as you suggest.  Thank you so much for taking the time to post that link.

As you say, this does seem to be a friendly and non-competitive forum. It may be a mis-conception on my part but it seems that not all bird photo sites are quite as welcoming to such a range of levels of interests and abilities.

I doubt that I'll ever attain the level of technical competenance (or the desirable levels of patience) that good bird photgraphers seem to have. But I'd certainly like to improve. And, like you, I do enjoy looking at other people's photos, and reading the accompanying stories.

So - emboldened by your invitation to post more - here's another one. A pair of galahs who were nesting about 20m from the verandah.  We have a couple of regular pairs here and they seem very attached to each other.  The quality of the hand held photo was pretty rough but the iPhoto storage software on the Mac allows you to sharpen things up a bit. Made the sky look a bit different though!

Thank you Elsie, for the welcome and the kind encouraging words.

I'm soon going to run out of my small stock of postable bird photos, but here's one more.  There's no detail at all, and it probably breaks all the rules of decent bird shots, but - for me anyway - it has a real feeling of tranquility that makes me feel more relaxed whenever I look at it.  Perhaps it's just because it recreates for me the feeling of the time and place it was taken?  It was early evening on the river near my father-in-law's house. The bank was quite overgrown, and when I peered through some bushes, I saw this bird sitting in quiet contemplation of the river.

Hi Chris,

welcome! I hope you continue to enjoy the site and I am sure if you have searched through all the other sections as well as the forum you will see that this site is a whole lot of about recording and preserving our wonderful bird life and sharing an interest.

That is why I like this site. Lots of useful information in every direction I look, lots of great pictures of birds I may never get to see for myself and very friendly helpful members!

Sharing bird photographs on some sites can be a bit of a challenge because of the focus on 'the perfect picture' where here it is more about sharing the birds we have seen and managed capture.

I love yourphotos and I agree about the last one being peaceful.

Welcome Chris, hope to see a lot more photos of the birds around your place.

I really like that tlast photo you posted of what I think is a Darter, nice mood about it.

The low key approach was what first attracted me to this site plus the great breadth of

knowledge displayed by the more experienced birders here.

Cheers

Hi Chris & welcome.

Sorry for the late reply, been on holidays.

Man you are so lucky to live with these birds at your doorstep.

Plenty of opportunity to learn, and this is a great site to learn, meet like minded people and share your wonderful photos.

Look forward to seeing more from your backyard.

Cheers

Devster
