Life outside Birding

I know we all love birding but there are sometimes other activities of interestsmiley

One of mine is diving and having recently started taking stills again underwater I thought it would be nice to put up a few photos. These were taken on the weekend in Tank Cave, Mount Gambier.

Would be great to see some photos of other peoples pastimes.

Here's my other interest which has seemed to have taken a back seat to photography the last 6 months or so.

Pretty Dodgey photos, but as you can see I didn't take them wink

Seems to be a theme here smiley I also was a very keen fisho till diving and birds took over.

Only so much disposable income and hours in the day.

Some nice fish there

Devster, Spanish Mackeral?

Shorty is that a Golden Trevally?

Had to go way back and scan a couple of prints to get a fishing shot from about 15 years ago.smiley

Cheers

Yep - Spanish Mackerel Rick

It was the best charter fishing I have ever done.

We got to the fishing grounds about 7:30am with 11 of us on the boat.

By 9:30 am we had bagged out on Spotties and just shy of the mark with Spanish.

Our Catch for the day.

my obsession before birding was motorcycles - actually long distance rides of 1000+ kms per day

the Triumph Sprint pictured was bought as a demo bike in July '07 with 850 kms on the odometer and I parked it in the garage in Apr '10 with 40000+ kms on the odometer,

it never travelled less than 250 kms, except when it went for a service

I have tried to combine birding and the bike but sitting in the sun at the Toorbul Wader Roost in black bike gear is not fun

My interest is photography. So taking pictures of birds is not so much an obsession but more of an interest. I take photos of everything but have become more interested in birds the last few months. I am very keen on photographing the endangered species like the regent Honeyeater. I believe there were a number released at Chiltern just recently. Fortunately I live 30 min away so can't wait to have a look for this rare bird. Sounds like I am becoming obsessed :)

and for a few months in '09 I had 2 bikes until I dropped and wrote off #2 the Honda ST1300; I had bought this 2nd hand and only had it for about 3 months and 6000 kms before the accident; my 1st ride on this bike brought a big smile to my face as it had a 29 litre fuel tank and I could go 500+ kms without stopping; the Sprint can get 410 kms if the right wrist is not too heavy

My 2 oldest grandsons did like this bike

I love music and was a keen guitarist/vocalist in a heavy metal band in my 20s. But since I met my now wife 17 years ago I've sold all my guitars etc. My other big passions before birds and digital photography took over my life was music and scuba diving (and u.w photography well before the digital age).

Since my love of music hasn't waned, I now just listen to my fave bands and see them live. On the other hand, photography is still strong and I spend probably more time on landscapes/waterfalls and mushrooms lately than birds. My growing interest in landscapes and my love for gum trees made me decide to take up oil painting sometime soon.

Here's me with my favourite band - Dream Theater - last October, when I was fortunate enough to be able to meet them.

Outside of birding I care for my daughter, Terri, who has a brain injury from an accident when she was 6 months old. She is 27 now and I try to combine my love for my daughter, with my love for the outback, and my love for travel by taking Terri on road trips where we camp along the way.

Terri has covered more miles and seen more of Australia than most people have and that makes me happy! While it can be a challenge camping with Terri it is so much fun we don't mind the challenges.

It is wonderful how much love and effort you put in to ensure your lovely daughter's life is filled with joy and fantastic memories Wollemi. :)

Thank you Canonguy,

yes it makes me happy knowing she has a lot of happy memories.

Looks like a life you can enjoy inside birding as well, Wollemi.

I do try to do some birding while travelling with Terri, but my main concern is ensuring Terri has a range of new experiences and enjoys herself. Birding takes a back seat, but sometimes I get to just sit somewhere interesting with Terri and enjoy the atmosphere and I keep the camera close by.

You SOLD your guitars!!!  That must have taken some determination. I thought guitar owners only ever collected more....

Great pictures from everybody. It's good to see what things people here do other than crawl round the shrubbery chasing our feathery friends.

I'm in a similar boat to Wollemi, having been the main carer and teacher for my disabled son for the past 22 years. But my wife retired a couple of years ago so I now get more time for other pastimes.

Good thing I kept my guitars...

I also joined the local Vollies and now get to play at driving the fire engine and tackling bushfires, which is mostly quite good fun and only rarely a wee bit hair-raising.

And I kept the motorbikes too. So apart from fending off fast encroaching senility I should be set for a few years now.

No fishing yet. Still time though....

Fantastic thread topic!  Similar situation to Wollemi and Chris, sole Carer for my additional needs daughter, trained Teachers Aide (when there's work, thanks for the Ed cut-backs Gov).  Run a small kids photography group at my daughters school on a volunteer basis.

Started training this year in Penguin & Shorebird Care/Rehab and back to school next year to get some formal qualies there.  Currently converting the shed/workshop out the back of home into a Penguin/Shorebird Hospital.

Very involved with Coastwatch - we rebuilt part of a Penguin fence along part of my designated section of shoreline, yesterday & today.  I'm pretty handy (for a girl laugh), but some new skills learned there let me tell you!  And if I find the buggers that stole the droppers etc from the other fence, I hope they can run fast.

Recently joined local Field Nats, accidentally going on an almost 15km walk on my first outing with them over some pretty rocky and steep terrain way beyond my fitness level.  But I did it, only finished 10 minutes after the Octogenarian members too blush.  Wonderful bunch of people, and we will be going to next months outing, which I am assured will be a "normal" meandering short type walk.  Please let it be so. laugh

Not an extreme variation to birding I guess, haha, but keeps me busy!

The entry to my new office space.

My very dear friend, mentor, trainer and guru in all things Penguin and Coastish at the rear closely supervising my darling daughter, who was assisting in the release of a (now) healthy Little Penguin (or "Bubbles" as we dubbed him).

Bubbles, doing one last swim by.

Yes mate, very sad to this day. I had a black Ibanez (can't remember model), a black Ibanez Destroyer, a black Jackson King V, a flameburst Jackson soloist strat and a black Jackson Dinky with the reversed headstock. The flametop was my allaround fave guitar to play. Was thinking of getting back into playing, but I don't want to spend my spare time locked away in a room by myself with jamtrax.

As for fishing, I was a mad keen fisho up to my early 20s, then scuba diving took over my life. So I haven't fished for years and years. Would possibly get back into it later in life. I always loved the solitude of the outdoors at first light on the ocean shores trying to outsmart the bastard fish. LOL
