Canon Extenders.

Can anyone explain the difference between the mark III Canon extenders and the original extenders please?

I have both the x1.4 and x 2.0 original extenders (i.e. they are not Mark I,II or III) and they do not allow me to stack them or is there something I am not aware of that I need to do in order to stack them?

Are yours AF?

If so, then they are most likely Mark I. You could always google the answer, it will most often come up with useful info.

I know that with the MF and the EF Mark I as well as EF Mark III extenders a 12mm extension tube had to be fitted between converters due to some extender part that would otherwise make it impossible to attach them together.

I have the EF Mark II and can lock the 1.4x into the back of the 2x without an extension tube. So the combo is lens-2x-1.4x-camera body.

When you say AF are you referring to "Auto-focus" if so they are.

Neither of them have a marking on the side to say they are MK I but I suppose they might not have marked up the first one?

I would have to check which ones mine are but I've tried both ways of attaching them to each other and can't do it.

I should have thought of the 12mm extension tube. Pretty sure I will have to go lens-2x-12mm ext tube-1.4x-body. With a 500mm lens on a 70D this should give me (500x2)x1.4 x1.6 = 2240mm focal length.

I want to try to take some shots of the moon at night and at the moment it's quite low and a perfect opportunity.

Thanks for the reply.

Yes AF, auto focus.

I suspect the Mark I extenders didn't have anything on them. Try the extension tube and you'll be laughing. As long as you got live view to to focus. It becomes tough for most cameras. My older 1D3 does well (albeit slowly) when AF-ing using the stacked 2x + 1.4x.

Is that a 500 f/4L IS?

Yes.

I have noticed the 2x when on the 70D will not allow auto focus but I also have a 1D MK III which will auto focus with the 2x.

Just tried the extension tube and it will not accept an extender from the rear. Extension tube has an hexaganol opening and the extender has a round protrusion.

My extenders are both marked EF.

If you have a Canon extension tube then it should work.

You were right. I bought one and gave it a run this afternoon but boy say good-bye to light as you knew it. The same camera and lens this afternoon went from f/5.6 to f/11.0 by adding the second converter.

These Bee-eaters and a Spangled Drongo were feasting on a wild bee hive at least 18 to 20 metres above me. Even with the 500mm and a 2x the results were never going to be any good. This is with a 2x and 1.4 stacked...

I find the stacked TCs work really well, though I use an EF500mm f/4L IS USM lens as the main lens with them. See below samples, but you need GOOD light and be pretty close.

Nice! How close were you for these?

20 meters mate. Only 20 in a hide though that was set-up in place for a week so the raptors get used to it.

The head and shoulders photos are cropped to about 70% of the original file. Most are close to full frame as they are here.

It is amazing to watch them soooo close. cool

Just happened across your post Reflex. I don't see anything wrong with that shot.It is very sharp considering the two tele's. That guy on the top left appears to have been moving as you pressed the shutter. Those eagles are awesome Canonguy!
