Hello from the Redlands QLD

Hello,

I'm very new to the world of Birding, infact my 4 year old son got me onto it as he loves everything birds. We go out as often as we can watching, photographing (not very well i might ad) and enjoying birds. Mainly in the parklands and nature walk at the end of our street.

Master P is excited to go looking for Glossy Ibis. Tips on where they maybe around Brisbane are gladly accepted

Welcome cat

I too am from Brissy in Qld but have not had the pleasure of veiwing a Glossy Ibis here. Plenty of Straw-necked & White Ibis though, as well as Spoonbills which are fun. I have been teaching my sons, especially bird calls as I find that being able to identify a call really opens you up to birding on a whole new level.

Like the other day I was out with my son & my camera and I was listening to all the Brown Honeyeaters, Magpies, Butcherbirds, Magpie Larks, Noisy Miners, Crows etc, when amongst all that noise I heard a faint but definate call of the Mistletoebird. I traced it down and was not only able to see it but managed to get get the photo below as well. Then while I was photographing this, I heard the faint "prip" of the Rainbow Bee-eater. I managed to find it as well and get the other photo. If I had not been able to identify these birds calIs I would have completely missed them.

Anyway good luck on your Glossy Ibis hunt and if you find some in Brissy I would love to know. The Mt Cootha Botanical Gardens is a nice place to take the kids for birds. Plenty of Ducks, Coots, Moorhens as well as turtles, Waterdragons etc.

Yes I am slowly (and I mean slowly learning bird calls) My little fella is much better at identifying a bird from its call then I am.

It is so relaxing to just sit, relax, listen and wait. Im really enjoying it.

Great photos. My camera lens isnt big enough to get great photos but I do the best with what I have. Im not sure how to put an image in so i cant share some of my photos sorry

We see lots of spoonbills, ibis (both straw neck and white) cormorants (little black, little pied and great cormorants) Spangled drongos, rainbow lorikeets, kookaburras, grey fantails and we have some beautiful fairy wrens and honey eaters around. We live in such a lovely area

Started bird watching because my 5 year old loves birds. I now enjoy bird watching very much

There are a couple of different ways to post an image.

If you just have a Jpeg file, make sure it's less than 500k, go down to choose file, upload and your photo should on here for us to see.

BIBY also has a great tool for learning bird calls.

They have the Top 40 Bird songs, thats how I started.

Just visit http://www.birdsinbackyards.net/birds/featured/Top-40-Bird-Songs

There are also some phone apps available as well.

Happy learning :)
