Dragonfly

It was a pretty warm day here in Victoria and it seemed like every bird and insect was out and about. Unfortunately I didn't get any photos of the beautiful butterflies and birds that were in my garden but I got a few shots of this little dragonfly. It let me get really close to it so I could get a few nice photos.  I personally think it is very pretty and I was very lucky to get so close.

Wow, he is one magnificent Dragonfly. Do you know what species it is?

Sorry Ryu, I have no idea what Dragonfly species it is. I'm pretty hopeless at identifying insects and I don't really know any Dragonfly names.

is it not a damselfly based on wing-at rest position? (i was under the impression that dragonflies hold their wings flat away from the body when resting).

I agree Zosterops, it looks to me like a Damselfly. Based on the slender body, the eyes being wide apart and as you mentioned the wing position along the body at rest. As to what type of Damelfly I have no idea

Thanks Devster and zosterops...I'm a beginner at identifying insect species so I probably need a bit of practice before I start getting to know my insects. (I think I'm better with birds, mammals and reptiles.)

Could be "Metallic Ringtail" (Austrolestes cingulatus)

Yes, thanks al and Devster, I am now certain that the Damselfly is a female Metallic Ringtail.
