Bird of the Week Challenge: 30th November - gulls, terns and pelicans OH MY

Its Monday again everyone!

This week's theme comes at the suggestion of a member (they can out themselves if they like). So lets head toward the water and see photos of some summery birds. Specifically we are looking only at gulls, terns and pelicans...

This Challenge has shown me that I need to get out more and photograph more of these birds as I don't have many pics. Not a particularly great photo as the sun was on the wrong side, but I like the falling feather.

This is a Kelp Gull.

They are found occasionally along the Southern Australian coast - the Pacific Gull (I can post one later) is found more often.

Pacific Gulls, Cape Le Grand. Not sure what these gulls were doing. They touched beaks a number of times but no food was exchanged. Hope this looks OK as I no longer seem to get a preview.

This is an Antarctic Tern (sorry I'm cheating by uploading two photos haha).

I find it funny that this weeks topic wanted "summery birds" such as gulls and terns. Thought I'd through a spanner in the works, hahaha.

Well done on the terns-in-flight images above! I have always found them a bit too speedy to capture them very well up until this point! I do have some gulls handy, though!

I suppose this is also a bit of an introduction, as it's going to be my first post on these forums, but I'll be sure to head over and introduce myself properly afterwards..

As it is, I saw this challenge and these were fairly fresh in mind, as they were only taken a few weeks back. So happy to have some sun and warmth down by the water. The pacific gulls and the various cormorants put on a fairly good show with their incessant bickering. For pelican pictures I'd have to delve a bit deeper into the archives.

Things got a bit hot on this one. Wish my pp skills could save the nuclear meltdown happening above his/her tail feathers!

I hope these are up to par for the gull appreciator(s) out there! There are plenty more where these came from haha. I hope I've linked them properly, this is my first attempt, which never seems to end well.

Welcome to forum detritus - excellent photos, thanks for sharing. Great sequence of shots there.

Welcome Detritus. This forum is more about birds rather than the photography but your shots are fantastic!! Just a heads up for next time, with the challenges, normally each person posts one image then waits for at least 2 others to post before they post another. This give everyone a go at posting their images. As you are new I'm sure we will all forgive you (insert smiley face here) Hope you enjoy this forum as much as I have.

Good to see some new posters joining in.

I think I am out of Terns now, so what about a Sandgate special.

Nice one Reflex.

Anything is better than those photos of gulls devouring baby ducklings!

Great photo of the Antarctic Tern on the ice Dave - you have done some travelling to get that one.

Ahh, my bad! Makes sense, and I'll stick to posting just the one in the future. Thanks for the kind words and the welcome, too. Doesn't bother me that the forum is more bird-centric than photography. They go hand in hand for me but learning about/discussing the birds is a pleasure by itself.

Look at all those birds. I love how the two species of tern are next to each other for size-comparison! White-Fronted Terns and Little Terns?

Where was this taken WD?

Thanks Dave - they are Little Terns and Gull Billed Terns.

Taken at Stockton Sandspit at Newcastle - have you been there? It is a fantastic spot for shorebirds.

for Reflex- I went down to a local beach yesterday to test my new canon setup, ended up with a few shots that i was happy with, including this one. Light was poor so i think this shot finished better in mono.

Great stuff Snail, this is very good and going to your local beach is a great idea!

Looks like you have more than a bit of an artistic streak in you, I would never have thought of doing that and it's made such a good shot out of what was just an every day seagull having a preen.  After seeing this one I am looking forward to seeing more contributions from you.
