I am hearing a bird at night, maybe next door which is a derelict yard and building, which sounds to me very like the channel billed cuckoo, from the sound files on BBY list. It is a loud squawking sound, that goes on for a while. It just doesn't seem to fit that it would be this, in the inner west suburbs sydney. I haven't been able to see it. Does this make sense or does any one have any other suggestions?

Can you try and get a recording?

Could it be a Koel? Or maybe even a Catbird? But as Ryu said, a recording will help greatly

I will try to get a recording! Thanks.

Elizabeth,
Loud squawking at night, like a Brogla with a fish stuck in its throat, is a classic Channel Billed Cuckoo call, although you should check that it is not a fruit bat against online recordings. Channel Billed Cuckoo's are common in Sydney where they typically parasitise Pied Currawongs.
Thank you very much for this, I am sure that's right now. The fact file for this bird says it is a 'screecher' but the only way to describe it is a loud raucous squawking.
