'Flying ivory' hornbill bird gains extra protection

Too late to to withstand the exploitation of humans? Hopefully not. What kind of education programme is needed to encourage people to preserve rather than exterminate wildlife? Is overpopulation a factor in this attitude towards wildlife? Or do we need to change the increasingly strong culture of crass  materialism that continues to sweep our planet? If so, how? Or do we accept that some actions might preserve species while other, delayed, actions will be too late? And how will ever-decreasing biodiversity affect the survivability of our own species?
