Woody Heads seabirds

Just spent a few days at Bundjalung National Park at Woody Heads camp ground, near Iluka in northern NSW. Took these shots out on the point among the rocks and seaweed. Quite a few firsts for me.

Great set mate as always,

That second photo is a cracker, is that a Lapwing??

Dont take life too seriously, it never ends well

Excellent set of shots there ...

Im not 100% convinced that is a sanderling (based on that one pic) as sanderling would have a noticeacbly longer bill with a blunt rounded end ... the usual alternative is the red necked stint, but doesnt look quite right for that either. Wondering if it might be a a plover - maybe a young red capped plover?

Thanks WD. After consulting my Pizzey guide I think you are right. Looks very similar to a juvenile red capped plover. Thanks for the heads up.

Yep Masked Lapwing formerly known as Spurwinged Plover.

Cheers mate, never seen one of them before I think we only have banded over here in my neck of the woods

Great shots. How that Lapwing can see through that mask on his face is beyond me. Love the Ruddy Turnstone and the Sooty Oystercatcher

Thanks Devster. Have just added another Lapwing image (hopefully below) that shows just how difficult it is for the bird to see straight ahead. Nature does some strange things!
