two Brown Goshawks or not?

Sorry for presenting this common ID problem again. Both birds were seen at Hells Gate Roadhouse in Queensland which lies west of Burketown on the Savannah Way.

At the time I had thought the adult to be a Collared Sparrowhawk as it seemed smaller. The wasps are included for comparison. However, after checking the latest bird guide, I now think one is a juvenile Brown Goshawk and the other an adult Brown Goshawk.

I realise that the size of a bird is very difficult to judge without a direct comparison as they all seem very small when not at the end of a long lens!

Sue, none of them seem to have that fierce glare so characteristic of the Brown Goshawk. There's also an extended middle toe on the bird in photo 2 which is characteristic of a Collared Sparrowhawk. So I'm inclined to think they're all Collared Sparrowhawks.

Dont know enough to venture an opinion- but you got a great set of photos that a raptor expert should be able to give a positive id

I just tried another site for ID and they came back confirming my thoughts on the day... juvenile Brown Goshawk with worn tail and adult Collared Sparrowhawk (smallish head). So difficult doing these from photos that I think comparison on the day is important. Thanks for the feedback.

Beautiful -- bird and photos! There is a Brown Goshawk near our park, but it rarely shows itself (to me).
