Mystery Bird?

Observed in a gum tree a few months ago. Located in a patch of forest near the coast on the Central Coast NSW. Help needed with ID please.

How big would you say it is?

...and where?

It could be a thornbill or a whistler?

Thanks soakes,

The bird was located in a coastal patch of forest on the NSW Central Coast.

Certainly wasn't a thornbill or a whistler, I am very familiar with these species. I was thinking more along the lines of a juvenile cuckoo, unsure of the species.

Thanks for any help..RT

Hmm... I guess you mean a small one like a Horsfield?

It could be, but the beak doesn't seem right.

I would have probably gone for whistler too from the photo.

Other thoughts, maybe a shrike-thrush? Or a robin?

Tail reminds me of L.B Flycatcher but outside it's range.

Jacky Winter or Female Flame or Rose Robin are candidates...

Having said that, Rufous whistler is probably right. Very similar to one just uploaded to WAB facebook page (Joey Jackson):

Thanks for the help, it does appear to be a juvenile rufous whistler upon closer examination. The very faint striations on the breast/belly threw me a little.

Much appreciated,

RT.
