Bunya Mountains National Park

I've not gone on an outing in quite a while now, but I thought I'd share some photos from the last time I visited the Bunya Mountains Park (QLD).

This year has flown by so fast that I can't believe that this was a good 7 months ago now! It was my first ever sighting of (what I believe was, please correct me if i'm wrong) a female Riflebird and I was so excited! The resident Sooty Owl was still in it's hollow, it's been there for years now! I'm always so happy to see it, even if it's so hard to get a good photo.

Hoping to go back soon so I can update these photos, so I thought i'd open this thread up to others who've been to the Bunya mountains. If you've been and have photos, then please feel free to add them here. I'd love to see what you've discovered in your adventures in the park!

Marvellous shots, Elsie. And, no doubt, a marvellous experience.

Thank you both! And it's so nice to see you're still here Woko! Going to the Bunya mountains is always lovely, and the most exciting thing for me is looking for the Catbirds! I'm still yet to get a good photo of one, but i'm determinied! One-day it will happen!

Still here, Elsie. Constant as the northern star. And still banging on about the same old issues which, funnily enough, aren’t going away!

Great to see you’re back & that you’ve brought your enthusiasm with you.

I'm so glad Woko, those issue sure do need banging on about! We've got to keep pushing until some change starts to happen for our beautiful birdlife!

Since I was here i've gotten into permaculture (now certified to teach), and am fighting as best I can to give future generations the chance to see the same birds i've grown up with. I know it can feel like one person doesn't make much of a difference, but each of us who loves birds and takes the time to watch them, take photos and talk to others about them - we are making a difference!

And yes Timmo! Such a wonderful place and so full of birdlife!

You'll always hear the Catbird before you see it lightuningbird. They sound like the craziest cat, or a small child crying. Had the funniest experience once in the Bunya mountains, I was walking with a few others and we'd found a group of catbirds. So excited and trying to coax them down out of the canopy so I could get a photo and a better look. One of our party is a very good mimic and was doing a great job of immitating their wailing call, and it was working! They were getting curious and i've got a half blurry shot to prove that they came to check us out. But right in the middle of my party wailing and calling away - a group of walkers traipsed around the corner! Suffice to say we shut up very quickly, but i'm pretty sure they didn't believe us when we said we were trying to find a bird... and we got some very strange looks indeed! Just a day in the life of a birdwatcher I guess!
