Rainbow lorikeets and eastern rosella

I got a photo of the parent eating apple and a better one of the baby. I cropped and resized the 2 adult photos. I also caught Mrs Rosella coming out of the rosella box. I feel like a mad poster at the moment but I'm trying to learn from my mistakes!

They are gorgeous birds with personality aren't they? Lovely photos. Love the nesting box - I put one in a tree in our yard several years ago and the parrots checked it out - but a Ringtail possum moved in, and has been there ever since!!!

Very sharp and well-exposed images, Birdgirl. A very common pair of birds but ALWAYS a oleasure to see them.

I feel so lucky to have some of the most beautiful birds in the world coming into, and breeding in, our backyard. But I would be delighted to see possums too.

HI Birdgirl
Top shots I have my nest boxes painted but I think it will be to late before I get them up(I can trade you one possom for 2 rosellas )LOL.

Its not too late! They look for several months before choosing. The galahs usually nest late August and the rosellas a few weeks later. But it is variable. The rosellas like a higher box and the rainbow lorikeets must nest even higher because they have never shown any interest in the rosella box even though it is their size. The boxes need to be at least 3 m apart or they wont' both be used. We have had galahs mating outside the galah box, as soon as it was put up, while the paint was still drying!

ps I would love the possum but I am afraid my cat and his new wife would get it

HI
Can you tell me how high they are please

Birdgirl2009

The galah box is only about 3 m above the ground - from ground to the roof of the box. It is on a pole because we put it in one of the gum trees the first year and the galahs nearly ringbarked all the branches. Only a nesting pair do this - we have many galahs in the yard every day of the year and no others have done this. They do nest that low but try to get into the rosella box (smaller but higher) first. The metal sheet around the hole you can see in the photo above is to stop the galahs chewing the entry hole bigger. They also chewed off all the perches - the middle one has been replaced. THe rosella box is about 7 m above the ground, from ground to roof. The Reader's Digest complete book of birds says galahs nest 2-20 m above the ground and eastern rosellas nest 2-15 m above the ground. The birds prefer a box as high as possible but will take a good box if nesting hollows are scarce. The boxes really need a clean out after each season though. The rosellas don't put anything in theirs. We put clean gum leaves in at the beginning of the season to stop the eggs rolling around when it is very windy and the wind blows the branch the box is on (this is not a problem with natural tree hollows). The galahs keep putting fresh leaves in so by the end of the season there is about 30 cm of compacted leaf and poo. Yuck!

Thank you very much I expected that they would have to be a lot higher that is a great help thank you again.

Just took another peek at these birdgirl. You say you are trying to learn from your mistakes, yet you don't seem to be making too many of those of late. Again, these are gorgeous shots - looks like you have your 'bird sanctuary' well set up.

Don't forget to post a pic of the boxes when you get them installed and post again when you have some takers. Don't be disappointed if they look and then you don't see them for a while - most years we get to the stage when we don't think anyone will actually move in ... and then they do
