Who was the agressor??

I saw a what appeared to be a flock of Rosellas in a dogfight with a smaller group of Miners but could not figure out who was chasing who as they flew in, out and between the branches of a leafy eucalypt. One thing I can say, those Rosellas sure know how to fly and their eyesight must be extraordinary to do so with such precision. At first I mistook the Miners for Butcherbirds.

Taken last Wednesday just before the rain hit.

Well spotted Tark. It could be either way - our rosellas are starting to defend their nesting box. Once a large group of rosellas flew in wildly circling each other. 2 tumbled down, locked with each other and landed on the grass. I walked right up to them - they were so intent on their battle they didn't notice me or the fact that they were lying on our lawn for a few seconds

Thanks Sis, I've seen that behaviour in Rosellas several times, wildly circling each other. First time was a month ago and I thought it was some kind of game they were playing. But on Sunday they were either chasing or being chased by miners. I'm thinking that maybe the miners would outgun the Rosellas in a dogfight.

at our old place the noisy miners seemed to pick on the rosellas (and pretty well any other bird) quite a lot, but it might depend which group had the numbers as to who were the aggressors.....

Thanks mate. I'd say the Rosellas had the numbers two to one, and were probably protecting their patch.

Pretty bird Tark - the Rosella. In our neighbourhood the Noisy moners win by strength of numbers most times. I've seen heaps of dog fights lately up in the air and the lorikeets are pretty good at it too . Especially with the raptors hanging around at the moment. ..... yes I am actually getting to wee lots of raptors but never when I am near a camera!

Why has your miner got blue eyes compared to ours? Does that he's immature or something?

The other morning I got woken up by Noisy Friarbirds AND Noisy Miners squabbling in the trees.
Now, there's a cacophony.

I love that word Steve. And it fits my neighbourhood perfectly every morning!! It's like waking up in an aviary.
Then at dusk lately the Currawongs sing and call to eachother from the tall trees surrounding us and it really is rather lovely to listen to. I am looking for an easy way to record it but my phone records in a different format and I am not sure if the laptop would pick it up or not.

Cheers
