They're impressive birds, aren't they, Tark?

I haven't seen them before either. Nice white edge on the wing

Very good capture, Tark. I have a feeling that it may be a Kelp Gull, mate. It does not have the diagnostic black stripe along the base of the tail. The beak does not appear to be large enough for a Pacific, either. Cheers,

Denis - Tassie - Birdgirl - George - dingo - thanks to you each and all. George and dingo, yes, you're right and we discovered the error today ourselves before we read your threads. Today's blue sky and fair weather found us driving down to Middleton south of Hobart where we saw what at first we took for the same bird seen at Goulds Lagoon earlier this week. But Sandra's critical eye soon realised that it was similar but different, and when we got home she looked it up and there it was - we had photographed a Pacific Gull. As she (by a stroke of pure a - - e got the better shots with her little Canon S5-IS!) I shall leave it to her to do the honours in a new post of her own.

Setting this record straight, here is my take of a tagged Pacific Gull.
