Thanks for looking Ed - I looked the Triller up - seems they are migratory from New Guinea & Timor, arriving in Aus about now. I wonder if they get as far as SA? The female looks to be quite browner in colour - did you see her when photographing yours?
Hi Lyn
That is the male in breeding plumage, although some guides do say 'migrant to northern islands', others say 'not many Australian birds make it out of the country' with most of the movement north south in Oz. Our local birds are sedentary or locally nomadic and turn up at any time, normally it is the nonbreeding male or female that I see. They appear to be unreliable in so far as they may breed in large numbers in an area one year and then not be seen in that area for many years after. My Atlas of Aust Birds (an old one) shows a fairly high breeding rate in SA.So you may see them from now till around March.
.
Ooops sorry Lyn about your beloved Crows, we got ours anyway.
Tark, I don't love the Colliwobbles anymore lol.
Dingo I read your post and cringed at the name Newcastle, I got caught in the Sandstorm on Wednesday (Not Fun)
could not wait to get out of the joint.
If any of you live in Newcastle or nearby I found a great spot for pics.
HI Tassie
You would have gone right past my door mate just north of Raymond Terrace you did have to call on the worse day of the year LOL.
PS Yes and where.
Gidday Dingo, Mate I drove through Hexam turned left heading in your direction, then turned into Tourle street.
I actually loaded at the coal reclaimers if you know where that is.
Mate the birding spot was a large water hole on the left hand side of Cormorant drive.
I would have stopped there if the condtions were not so bad.
There were heaps of birds there mate.

Tark !!! You are a genius, what a brilliant idea, yours and Lyn's black and white coffee mugs and jumpers are on the way.
Dingo, glad you know where that is it is so close and has a fair variety of birds.
Next trip I might give you a bell if you want.
HI Tassie
Yes mate that would be good next time
The water holes are drying up around here that's why the birds are gathering at what water is left. You where about 5km from the Stockton Nature Reserve where the migratory wading birds come every year not a bad spot to get photos.
I love the song of the Magpie it is quiet often my alarm clock on the side of the road.
Nice shots Lyn.
Don't see this guy very often, he also has a interesting call, very 'cheerful'.
White-winged Triller

I got some nice egret shots at that puddle late Thursday afternoon. There are a good lot of birds there at the moment.
Hi Marj, nice shot. Is that the same spot I mentioned to Dingo?
The large pool beside Cormorant Drive - as you turn the corner after the Tourle Street Bridge?
Nice lighting and reflections there Marj
Sunshine Coast Queensland
Yep thats the one I saw Marj, looks like a productive little spot, I am going to plan my next trip to fit that one in.
