Portrait of a Peewee

sharing......
stacked my converters on my new tele lens to get the equivalent of around 2,250mm of focal length. From about six meters away, this is all I could fit in the frame. :-)

So it's arrived. Congratulations! You must be thrilled to have it. What a great shot!! I hope you can take your holidays soon, if the rain ever stops for a whole day

Love the detail on the face Akos. Well done to get such a sharp shot close up. It can be hard to get right from my little experience.

Cheers, Owen.

I tell you what, if you're getting clarity like that from 6 metres away, that's one hell of a camera!

The camera is really irrelevant in the overall scheme of things. It's a common misconception that people comment seeing images "wow, you (I mean anyone who photographs) must have a great camera". That's incorrect. :-) In fact, the quality of the lens used and the person using it have everything to do with the image that is created. I don't mean to come out the wrong way, but it is the fact. If, for example, my good friend Birdie had a good quality lens to use, she could create absolutely, mind-blowing, and aesthetically beautiful images. She only uses a kit lens, which sadly is not a really good lens, especially for photographing birds or other wildlife. She does manage wonderfully though, and I can only imagine HOW awesome her work would become if she could upgrade to an L lens. I was also in the same boat as she is now, and it's heart breaking to not be able to capture good images because of lens limitations. :-) Cheers mate.

Your so right Windhover, the lens is everything, kit lenses are just that, cheap glass to make up a "kit"for people starting out, people ask all the time witch is the best camera and are surprised when i say it doesn't matter there all petty good, and never ask who makes the best lenses.
for what we do it's canon and then nikon you might get "lucky"with a third party lens but you'll more than likely be disappointed as you said on another post
"you get what you pay for "
A prime example on BIBY is birdgirl she has always posted great images and has upgraded to a good camera with a top quality lens and look at what she is putting up now!

Akos, you say that it would be heartbreaking to be limited by lens quality. But that would be only if your intention was to take a certain type of photos.

I am happy to take photos that are sufficient as a record of a good day, and maybe an aid to identifying a bird. I think some other people feel the same way. It wouldn't be sad for them or me to have their photo quality "limited" by the lack of a good lens.

To be honest mate, I've no idea about lenses and so on as I don't have a DSLR, but I have heard that the lens is more important than the body before (I think it was you or Birdie that said the lens is more important as that's where the photo is developed or taken or something). Top shot mate, keep them coming :)

Hellooooo! Could all of you get back down to earth, where some people live, that can "only afford a Sony and a cheap, crap kit lens" !!! People, who can't spend huge $$$,for huge lenses!!!

I'm hearing you Marie-Louise..... loud and clear!
I too live in the world that can only afford the "crap kit lenses" but for most people they are fabulous and give them the best results they have ever seen.
You guys need to think of it this way..... if I, as an automobile cretin, went to a salesperson and asked which is the best car for me...here is my given set of circumstances... I would not expect to be told that I should be buying European as all others are just a waste of time.
I am not heart broken with my work Akos.....just frustrated at times, but I am always mindful that to others it is an example of what they may aspire to do.
This is an amateur forum for birdwatchers primarily and while we discuss the merits of various pieces of equipment I would hate to chase anyone away form posting the work that is as good as they can get with whatever they use.

I'm with you both. i am quite happy with the results the lens I use gets and that's all I'm familiar with. I don't know anything else. I'm sure it would be great to have a top quality lens but people with lesser lenses can still take good shots.

Cheers, Owen.

I can understand both sides of the camp. I think there is the group of people who just love the birds and are just happy to have a memory of that day and what they saw and then there is the other side who are not just into the birds but are also into trying to get as perfect an image of that bird as they can. For myself having started off with photography as a hobby first and later getting into birding I can understand the obsession with equipment. And the lens is definitely the most important thing, followed by the photographer and supporting equipments etc.

I know Akos has said he has been waiting for this lens for over 10years. Its not that we are all rolling in money. I hope one day I will myself have an extra long tele lens. I have been saving up for a few years now and will take a few more. And when I get it I will hold it, i will hug it, i will kiss it and give her a name :)

I was born to live and I live to die.

Oh btw Akos, whats the sharpness like with all them TC's stacked on at pixel level? Do you loose much?

I was born to live and I live to die.

Well just to put my little bit in, It is very very simple for me "Family first,Hobbies 2nd" I am more than happy to be able to get out and about and simply bring home a record of the day,I have been doing it for years now and I am happy to keep doing it. At the end of the day I am grateful for what I have.

Tassie

Oooops sorry Akos.....Top shot mate....crystal clear.

I think we will stay on track if we remember we are a community of people with a common interest and each of us has something equally worthwhile to contribute.
I really appreciate and get inspired by the beautiful photos put up by people with pro equipment, I am grateful for the technical help from people who know more than I do and I am delighted to see photos of birds from around our country that I have not, and may never, see. I would be happy to see a rare bird or a quirky behaviour shot, even if it was taken by a kid with a box brownie. I am also happy to have a chat with people about any bird topics and to hear about adventures and exciting finds.
I think people who seem to be improving their photography are just trying to do PBs (personal bests), not compete with others.
btw I think people may not ask about lenses because we used to just buy a camera which came with a lens and that was that. Also some lens are part of the camera, like the one on my last camera.

I guess what I am trying to say....is rather than say how wonderful I could be if I had an expensive piece of glass ( and I know only too well that a good piece of glass is what makes or breaks a good photographer's picture) , I would rather say ... look how accessible and easy it is these days for the average person to aspire to produce good images that could only have been dreamt of about 15 years ago unless you wanted to spend a fortune.
Never before have the major camera brands catered for the domestic consumer market better than they do today.
OK you can say this is the ex Canon rep coming out in me but it is too true. Technology has been popularised to make it available for most people. As in any field ...there is always better equipment if you have the money. What I enjoy here in this forum is to encourage everyone to go out and enjoy the moment .... and to record it if you can on whatever you have... if that is important to you.
The sharing just adds to the enjoyment when there is no pressure to perform.
I hope I have made myself clear here as I tend to get tangled up in concepts when I write.

For those of you who know me can agree I have nothing against any lens in particular and I am not condescending in any way, shape, or form. Like Ace said, I have waited nearly a decade for this lens to come into my hands and now that my wait is over, I will gladly use it and happily share whatever I feel is suitable. Heck, everyone had kit lenses, even me. :-) Whatever suits and whatever everyone's priorities are. I don't have kids, don't drink, smoke, do drugs, gamble or do anything other than photograph wildlife, which is my ONLY passion. So this is my priority in life, other than looking after my pets and loved one. :-) Best regards
