Help identify bird call

Hi Guys, we live in Coffs Harbour, NSW & we have been hearing this bird for the last 2 years. Unfortunately we haven't seen it but it makes a very loud & distinctive sound, which can best be described as 'whoop, whoop, whoop'. It can call continuously for minutes at a time, sometimes not far away & at other times can be heard in the distance. No one we ask locally has been able to offer any clues & I have not been able (so far) to find any calls like it on the 'net. Do hope someone can help. Nick

Hi Badger,
Welcome to BIBY.
As a newbie myself, I can only guess at a Dove of some sort.
I have six different sorts here on my acreage on the Gold Coast and a few of them sound like that.

Hi kell & Denis
Thanks for your replies, it could be a dove of some kind I guess but I haven't been able to find a sound file of any dove that sounds like it. It certainly isn't a Common Koel, we have those & I know their calls. I'll try & get a sound bite of it sometime & see if I can post it hear. Cheers, Nick

Hi Guys,
Have managed to get a sound byte, you can hear it @ the link below, I don't think it's a pheasant coucal as that had been what I thought it was before hearing the call on the 'net.
Hope this gives you all a better idea than my description! Thanks again for your interest/help, Nick

Hi Stacey, sorry about the delay in replying to you but I have been unable to login since the website upgrade & BIBY have only just sorted ot out.

Anyhow, the answer to your question is that it turned out to be a Wonga Pigeon, which you might have found out by now.

Cheers,

Nick
