Hi everyone,
As you can see I am completely new to this forum and I know absolutely nothing about birds.
For more than 5 years, we have had a family of little birds returning to our backyard and nesting in an automatic watering hanging pot.
They are really lovely looking little birds, and although we always have a yard full of foster dogs (rescued from pounds) they just keep coming back.
I am not really sure, but I think that the latest lot of young (do you call them a family ?) have hatched in the last few weeks as there seems to be quite a few hanging around at the moment.
I am hoping that someone could identify them and advise if they are common in Western Sydney as we have only seen them in our yard.
We haven't fed them anything and they do seem to thrive quite well on their own but I was also wondering if it would be likely to cause harm or problems if we were to put seed or anything else out for them ?
I HAVE JUST REALISED THAT THERE IS NO LINK OR PROVISION TO UPLOAD AN IMAGE SO I WOULD APPRECIATE SOME ADVICE ON HOW I CAN ADD AN IMAGE TO THIS POST ???

I would hazard a guess and say it is a Striated Pardalote found all over Australia. Now let's just wait and see if I got it right.

As for uploading a pic, the image needs to be hosted on something like photobucket and then you link to the image there.

There is a message in another section that shows you how to upload photos. Unfortunately in this forum version there was no option to add an upload section though it would make life easier!
I have a rescue greyhound myself and look forward to fostering in the future :)

It's really great to hear about your rescued greyhound !!
I know that I may be (just a little) biased but I reckon that rescued dogs and puppies make the best pets.
My wife and I have fostered and rehomed well over 200 poundies from our place and we are constantly getting letters, cards and emails etc from their new families telling us how happy they are and how easy their poundies are to train etc.
I am sure that these special furkids know that they have been given a second chance and all that they want to do is make their new new families happy.
If you are interested in fostering, and if you live in Sydney's west, we would love to hear from you when you are ready...... I can assure you that foster caring is really an extremely rewarding experience !

She was due to be put to sleep on September 9 but when the pound staff rang and mentioned that she was pregnant, I shot straight over and picked her up.
On Sunday Sept 21, Sally proudly presented us with seven gorgeous puppies.
Obviously, it will be a while before they are ready to be adopted but in the meantime, we have Sally and her bubs here helping to keep things "interesting".
She just has to be one of the sweetest (and cheekiest) dogs that we have ever met !
I realise that I haven't said a word in this post about birds and I apologise to the moderators for that but I just
had to spread the word about this special little girl !!!

Lovely bird there, have not seen one myself.
I've seen your rescue organisation at petrescue.com.au - I'm currently scouting for a dog or two to adopt. Really want a german shepherd (though i hate to discriminate on breeds, really I just want to save a life), plus a play mate, something a bit smaller.
Do they burrow into the side of the hanging pot?? I have never heard of pardalotes nesting in an open nest and would be interested to find out how often it happens.

Sally, the little girl I mentioned in my post looks like a GSD cross but her puppies look more like border collie or blue cattle pups.

It's actually a plastic self watering pot with a hole in the side of the "water tray" that you are supposed to fill with water.
We don't actually water the plants in those pots any more as the pots seem to have become a haven for these birds.
They have virtually been coming back to the same pot for over five years now.
