2 bird ID's one pic

Hi, in Yarram, Vic at the weekend I spotted this bird which I THINK is a white browed Scrubwren, what do you think? now the other I have no picture. Heard it calling (and another answering further away next to the creek in Tarra Bulga NP, I identified what tree it was in and stood craning my neck for ages to try to catch a glimpse to no avail...it had a very repetative increasing in volume call,a series of same notes ending in a short trill. It sounded like a medium sized bird apparently able to keep very still, and up quite high hidden by thick foliage, my thoughts were of Grey Shrike-thrush, are they normally that elusive/shy though? any one any other ideas?

Hi Heva
yes, WB Scrub Wren.
The eyebrows tell you that, and the two tiny marks on the lower edge of the wing is also a clue.

PS Cannot make anything of your description of other call - sorry.
GST do have a range of calls.

Heh, those scrubwrens always look a bit worried.

I have no idea about the second bird, but I think you can rule out a grey shrike thrush. They are not very shy and although their calls are many and varied, the call you describe does not sound right to me.

Hi Soakes, yes he looks kind of annoyed to me with those 'eyebrows'.
Denis, I'll just have to go back to Yarram for another camping trip then ;) and record it on my phone, the problem was when I came back I listened to so many mp3's on this website I forgot what the original bird sounded like!

Use what talents you possess; the woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those that sang best

For the second one it might be a Superb Fairy Wren, you might wanna check it out, but unfortunately it's not medium sized and can't keep still.

Also, I'm thinking of the Koel's alternative call to the one that just goes up, they are medium sized and sit very still and don't tend to move.

Hope it helps.

Afterthought, maybe a common blackbird?

Hi Heva
Always good to have a reason to go back to Yarram, Birding!

hi Amateur, definately not superb fairy wren or blackbird, thought it might be a koel, as I hadn't heard one of those for comparison...but no, when I listened to one on mp3 it wasnt what I had heard in Yarram. I plan to go back weekend after next as there are some guided walks in the Tarra Bulga NP that I plan to go on and I shall go armed with phone to record. My money's still on a grey shrike thrush... perhaps I just came across an unusually shy one soakes?!
