Heard a young bird calling - just like a baby magpie but it wasn't a magpie. Looked a bit like a noisy minor from a distance but could see it wasn't closer up. The parent turned up and eventually shared some food with it.

Tried the Bird Finder and also looked through a Field Guide but couldn't work out what type of bird it might be. I think there was a large insect in the beak of the parent but it might have been berries or something else.

Possibly a Grey Butcher-bird.

Thanks Ray - I'd not seen a butcher bird before, well not knowingly.

Like your eagle.

Yep looks like a Grey Butcherbird parent and a very demanding baby :)

Thanks Kathie and I don't mean to be picky but it's a Brahminy Kite

You mean what I thought was an eagle is a kite? oops, sorry.

Where did you take it? It looks very similar to the bald eagle in the US - I was there in June this year and got lots of photos of them.

G'day Kathie,
Yeah the photo is deceptive, the bird is actualy a lot smaller than it looks. It is about a quarter the size of say a White-bellied Sea Eagle. The pic was taken at Illuka NSW. Ray

Nice one.
I once saw a parent butcherbird shove a 5-inch lizard down its baby's gullet. The lizard was almost as long as the bird!

:-)
