Hi from Charters Towers

It took me ages to tumble onto a bird forum! I live on the Burdekin River, a haven for birdlife. It's great to see so many wonderful photos on this site, and I'm looking forward to chatting here.

Hi Debbie,

Welcome, this is a great place to share photo's, stories etc. I can't wait to hear what sort of birds frequent the Burdekin River (Where exactly is that?).

Hi Gelmir!

The Burdekin River is in North Queensland, and is the largest river in Queensland. The Burdekin Dam sits on it, and holds back the equivalent of 3 times the size of Sydney Harbour.

The township close to where I belong is Charters Towers, and we are located around 130klm west of Townsville.

Our riverhouse is on the banks of the river, which allows us to watch the jabirus, egrets, brolgas, terns, white breasted sea eagles, stilts, ducks, cormorants etc on the river, and masses of cockatoos (black and white), rosellas, bower birds, wrens, honey eaters, oriels, kookaburras, dollarbirds, koels, bee-eaters and kingfishers in the eucalypts (just to name a few).

We have also had native hens and a variety of finches drop in as passers by. There is always something turning up out of the blue, and lots of birds also that don't belong to our area. It's thrilling to say the least.

Worst thing about our spot on the river, is weekends, when the dreaded motorbikes turn up to tear up and down the sand on the banks, and the wildlife takes flight. Nothing much I can do about that, apparently!

Wow!! It sounds like an ideal place to live to see birds.
Are there many predators like foxes, cats, quolls that threaten the birdlife up there?

No Gelmir, I can't think of any. (Not saying that there isn't any.....but we don't have foxes, cats or quolls here).

Sorry to be a wet blanket Debbie. I'd be happy to say quolls but truth is that unfortunately I would be absulutely stunned if you didn't have feral cats.

...you could be right, but we seem to have more dingoes and neighbouring dogs....I haven't seen a feral cat yet, so that has to be good news?
