Hello, My family are going away on a trip to South Australia and Adelaide, does anyone know any places we should check out for the whole family to enjoy, and for me what types of birds to expect and where maybe some good woodlands etc. where there will be a wide array of some interesting birds? I have also recently decided that I might get more into the technical sides of things with birds rather then just photographing them, anyone know a good place to get started with the study of birds? Hi! I live in the Adelaide Hills and a day trip to Hahndorf would be great for the family. A nice main street to wander and look at shops, have lunch and visit the Strawberry farm. On the way you could visit Warrawong Sanctuary - it is free - and a nice spot for an amble amongst the birds and animals. At dusk you may see a platypus. Cleland Reserve is also good. Further afield is the Fleurieu Peninsular and (keep this a secret) - _ the BEST beach in Australia is Horseshoe Bay at Port Elliot for a swim and a feed at the Best Bakery in the world - also at Port Elliot!

When you mentioned Sandpipers I immediately thought I should have mentioned Goolwa to you. You can visit there if you decide to go to Pt Elliot & Victor Harbor for the day.
If you have a 4WD you can get onto Goolwa beach and drive to the Murray Mouth which is interesting in itself, but you see quite a few birds on that beach, including Sandpipers and Oyster-catchers. The Coorong is quite a trip and at the moment with the drought and shocking conditions at our end of the river there isn't a lot of water there and not a lot of migratory birds. With a bit of luck you can see water birds (both freshwater and sea) around Goolwa. But inquiries at the Info Centres when you get to SA will help.
