Up close and personal with a wedgetail

Woohoo!.... had my pic taken today with a 20 year old wedge tail eagle at Australia Zoo.... wonderful to be eye to eye with such a huge and majestic creature. :)
Also spent some time in the rainforest aviary...surprise surprise... and got to witness at very close range a pair of emerald doves constructing a nest.... beautiful to see him flitting around and bringing back each piece of twig and giving it to her for careful placement in the nest.
Zoos definitely have their place in education that is for sure :)

Is 20 yrs old for a Wedgetail? I would love to have a raptor that returned to me out of free will! Have you read the Colin Thiele book "Wedgetail"? It is quite a junior book, but really heart-touching.
Bye, and don't forget to have a HOOT!

hi guts
well i wasnt there but my partner and 4 year old daughter were on the way home on the dirt road and slowed to a comotionin front invloving 4 magpies and some noisy miners over a pipe drain in the road .they slowed down at approach and out of each end of the drain, either side of the road came 2 (apair i think) wedgies !! . the eagles moved to the road and one to a nearby fence. the comotion continued as the smaller birds dive bombed the unconcerned eagles shrugging off their attacks. being 4 and almost home and in need of the loo my daughter and her mum had to move on and the birds flew away.(wheres the camera when you need it!) anyway there whole ting they said was over in 2- 3 minutes! wow i wish i had 2-3 minutes like that
cheers

that reminded me of a strange time, when my family and i were driving along a country road, when i looked up the hill, and saw a large (in my eyes, it was HUGE)bird sitting on it. It flew off, and we realised it was a wedgetail...i've never seen them sitting on the ground before, and it wasn't eating...maybe just having a breather??

another weird wedgie experience...we were yet again driving along a country road, when i saw a large white bird sitting in a field. There were some cockatoos and cattle egrets near it, unfussed, but it looked like a wedgetail? Albino perhaps? to this day, i still wonder......

don't forget to have a hoot!
