Birds around Finch Hatton?

We are off tomorrow to visit friends who are currently in Finch Hatton - anyone know of any places near there where we might see a few birds not to be seen in the Brisbane area? We will stay there in the van for a few days, and come back along the coast probably. any suggestions welcome!
Thanks, Meave

Hi Meave

This may be too late and I can't help you directly however today I just got my copy of "Where to Find Birds in Australia" by John Bransbury on Woko's recommendation and while it maybe a little out of date it might be worth seeing if you can get a copy from the library as it is a really good resource. I bought mine from the Book Depository.

It has a small 2 paragraph piece on the Finch Hatton Gorge and mentions a camping area near the entrance of the gorge plus some walking tracks to creek and waterfalls. The only bird mentioned specifically is the Buff breasted Paradise Kingfisher but says the best time is between Dec and March. It also mentions to watch out for leeches!! ;^|

I hope you have a good trip.

Thanks qyn55 - we actually just got back today (went up to see friends who were only there a short time, and had to come back for an appointment - much too quick a trip!) and Bob did get a couple of pics of an emerald fruit dove, an emu wren female and some plumed whistling ducks, looked for the paradise kingfisher but from what you say we were probably too early in the year. We will go back when I get over all these medical appointments I have at the moment, I am feeling well but the docs still want to check all the time. Nice really to feel they care. There were a couple of other birds we would have liked to have seen, but still there's always another trip isn't there? Thanks for your recommendation, I will look for that book in the library as you (and Woko) suggest, sounds like a good one to have.We also got a beaut pic of a black-shouldered kite, and another of a sea eagle - beautiful birds. haven't put them on the computer yet.

Hi Meave, it sounds like you saw some great birds! What a shame that you had to come back for a medical appointment (I hope all is well).
