Noisy locals in my garden

Today I couldn't work out why all the Lorikeets were just so noisy or cranky and as I was working in my room there was so much chaos outside that I had to go out and see what they were up to. iot appears that the umbrella tree has burst into flower and they absolutely love it... trouble is so do the Noisy miners and the Blue Faced Honey Eaters .... so they all screeched at eachother for the whole day and took turns chasing the other ones off "their patch".

I was really wishing I had a mute button for the garden LOL

You might have to wait a bit longer, sometimes very long. I find this very frustrating.

This is really weird..... then I found them the "library"?...... I just cant work this out at all. It seems the link to Flickr etc is a better way to go I'll try that.

I give up...now Flickr wont let me in either . I am obviously unable to use technology tonight

I just love seeing those birds in their habitat, birdie, & I just love the scientific name of the umbrella tree: Schefflera actinophylla. A few people grow them in Adelaide but  not many, probably because it's not tropical enough. Yet.

We have a couple out in flower around here and they get the same visitors.  Actually, fewer people grow the umbrella tree anymore as suburban blocks are small and the roots of those plants are vigorous and invasive, and will lift a driveway in time.  Seems a shame we are getting down to such small living spaces that the plants and wildlife have to go.

Can't believe I had so much trouble doing this..... obviously it is a glitch with the system and photos can take a while to load.  I gave up on Flickr after I couldnt get into it due to being on a new laptop and no longer having my passcodes remembered.... then came the Yahoo sign in stuff.......  everythign that is supposed to make life easier with technology seems to be getting so hard these days.... then they want you to have one sign in for everything..... what happens when you cant remember that and it locks you out.....????

Yes, my folks have exactly the same bird visitors when the umbrella tree is in flower at their place.

Good point Karen, about the vigorous and invasive roots - that's what makes it more or less a weed down here in SE Qld. This is one of those cases of the difference between native (as in Australian) and locally native (or indigenous/endemic to an area).

There are definitely better things to put in your garden that will still attract the birds and won't be spread as invasive species in local bushland.

Hey guys - so there are still delays in the time it takes for photos to appear sometimes? Are you noticing that it is a particular time of day that it is happening?

Whilst I have amazed myself at my ability to make some improvements on here without causing too much damage LOL - that is well beyond my means...

Yes Holly in my case it happened some time over night .... I could see them in what comes up as a library but couldn't get them to show. I will do it via Flickr from now on if it ever lets me back in!!!!

Just for the record here, I am aware of the status of the Umbrella tree in SE Qld .... this is not in my garden but rather immediately on the other side of the fence separating it from the stormwater drain/ fast running creek that has an easement alongside us. I was struck by the ferocity of the birds in their coveting of what is obviously a favourite treat for them .

Holly, I have those delays most of the time, sometimes it takes up to 40mn for the photo to come up. Then on top of that ,if you click on the image it says: This image could not be loaded. This delay is most annoying if you want a conversation going, or you asked a question. Even when you post a photo, if it only turns up much later, there might have been 5 other posts, and people mightn't even notice yours, or can't be bothered to look that far down the list. Very frustrating.

Holly, I don't know why you guys spent so much money on this forum upgrade instead of using the free phpBB software. That is SO EASY to manage! :-(

Lovely shots Adrienne. Gotta love your returning participation. :-)

It wasn't really money spent specifically on the forum upgrade Akos - it was the entire site that was upgraded so it wasn't just that we needed to upgrade the forum and could have left the rest alone. The forum 'module' is in the same CMS (drupal) so, from what I understand - it integrates better than other free software into this specific CMS (the modules in Drupal are free too but with the complexity of this website we needed someone to build it all for us - so we paid for the experience rather than the physical structures). I do have the capacity to do most things now on the site but there are some things still outside my knowledge base and that would be the case regardless of what forum software we installed.

Undoubtedly Drupal forums are different to others out there, unfortunately you all have seen a lot of the downfalls - this new upgrade I installed yesterday though has resulted in a forum that I think is quite similar to other types out there now. The issue with the uploading speed for the photos I am suspecting is a server issue rather than a software issue.

I know you guys have been very patient but I hope you are all somewhat happier with these newest additions (and I will try to sort out the server issue).

Holly don't stress..... I have no complaints and remember those of us who bring stuff to your attention are only doing so to keep you informed ( speaking for myself and I am sure for Akos and M-L anyway) . I would hate you to think that we didnt appreciate all the hard work you have out into this upgrade. :)

No its all good birdie :)

I am as disappointed as you all when things don't go to plan - I share your frustration. BIBY is my baby - I have been involved basically since its inception (or should that be conception?) over 10 years ago now.

And apologies for derailed your thread - back on topic now and back looking at your amazing shot :)

Hi Adrienne,

First up, thanks for the photos - nice shots of a bunch of local birds. And it's good to see you posting here again.

The comment about the umbrella tree was more in relation to Karen's comment about space in yards and plants disappearing. I meant to suggest that umbrella trees disappearing is not necessarily a bad thing, and that this status probably means that they are not sold in nurseries any longer (or hopefully not).

As a bit of a native plant nut, I have only recently made the finer distinction between native and locally endemic, and find it interesting to refine down from my previous belief of "native = good" to "native = more or less good, locally native = better".

Cheers

No worries Tim, with all the birdlife around here and their love of the seeds it would be hard to stop it invading the surrounds and they grow so prolifically as you know once they are in the ground and out of the old pots as they always used to be in my younger day.

I have learned that difference to about the local stuff and the endemic stuff. and was quite surprised by it at first.

ANyway, with all the rain tonight we might be lucky if it is still standing by the creekbed tomorrow morning LOL

Great to see an umbrella tree in flower and full of birds. We had one in Lismore

You're spot on, Timmo. We have the native plant Acacia saligna around here, especially on roadsides. It's a weed & crowds out the local Acacia pycnantha & Acacia paradoxa among others. We had one near our house which I eliminated. I'm still destroying its seedlings 22 years later. So be veeeeeeeerrrrry careful about which natives you plant, folks.
