After observing the two Wattlebirds yesterday, I would like to ask some questions. Do male birds say “NO”, even when the female makes a lot of effort to present herself? The couple I watched yesterday , she was obviously trying her hardest to get his “attention”. She sat close , wiggled her tail and crouched down, pushing him, to no avail. This display went on for a good ten minutes. He was just sitting there , looking rather bored and disinterested. I had a look at the photos I took, in most of them his position had not changed. That makes me ask the question, isn’t it normally the male displaying his willingness to mate and to impress the girl? And wouldn’t the male take the opportunity if it was offered to him on a platter? Any thoughts on this?? Here she is trying to win him over 
Lucky they are birds you are talking about because if they were humans you wouldn't be allowed to show most of the photos. It is hard to say why he isn't showing interest, maybe it is a long build up thing or he needs another bird to have a quite word with him.

but seriously I cannot find a reference for visual gender identification of Little Wattlebirds
in the dim distant past I have bred fancy pigeons and then a bit later fancy poultry and I used to favour vent or cloacal sexing where visual gender identification was not reliable http://www.dpi.qld.gov.au/27_2712.htm

Very interesting read your link, LOL, I don't think I can put anything up the bottom of a bird while I'm up a tree though. I think I'll let the Wattlebirds decide who is the boy, and who is the girl.
