Bird of the Week: 4th June - the Kites

Thanks everyone for your images last week - I loved them all heart

Thought we would go from tiny and delicate insectivore to powerful raptors this week. Rather than a specific species though, I have opened it up to all Kites - Black-shouldered, Square-tailed, Black, Letter-winged and Whistling...

Share some great images and stories here.

Looks like people have really taken to Bird of the Week, Holly. A great success, I'd say.

Lovely shots so far. I love the pied bullet heading for M-L's BsK - great timing M-L.

Here's some from me - a Black Kite on the foreshore at Derby.

A Black-shouldered Kite enjoying the last bit of his lunch at the Western Treatment Plant, Melbourne..

A Whistling Kite resting at the Broome sewage plant.

If someone could tell me why, when I upload 1000-wide images, they display as 560-wide images. Also, how can I get text above (or below) each image as M-L has managed to do.

Thanks in advance for any responses.

Wonderful shots all of them....I love Brahminies too Pacman , I had a pair circling me today...so majestic

Georgep to get the text you just have to use the return key at the end of your photo when it goes into your post and then type your text the normal way. Otherwise write your text first then insert the shots then add some more before the next one. Does that make sense?

Black Kite, sadly I have yet to see one in the wild. This is a captive from Taronga Zoo's flight show.

Square-tailed Kite, arguably my personal favourite of all Accipitrids (hawks, kites and eagles). After Black-shouldered, this is the most common species and I often see them around my house near Penrith during summer/autumn.....

You can link images from your web gallery via the small button at the top of the text box when you type. The button is the third one left of the Omega looking one looks like a square with some rainbow-like colours. That's a link to image button. Then your images will show at full size. See mine? My shots are 1000 pixels linked from my own site.

When you type text, put the cursor to WHERE you want the image to appear in between lines or paragraphs. Then try preview so you can see what it looks like once it's posted for real. Also, linking them will insert them into the textbox while you are still typing the words prior to posting.

If you attach, the software will compress to fit, but then as you view, you can click the image to blow it up to full size when viewing. Hope it helps mate.

Hmm - we set a limit to uploads so it displays them as a certain size. There are two ways you can upload photos George, either directly onto the server or using an external hosting site such as Flickr - by using the external hosting you can insert the text throughout the post.

There is a how to upload section in the Announcements forum now.

The quality of the images is outstanding.

Akos, I'll get you a sighting of a Black Kite for a guided tour of your Square Tail area. wink

Here's a teaser from Darwin at Holmes Jungle where there were about ten Black Kites in every tree and a few in the air overhead the tip. I stopped counting at 250. I've also added a Brahminy Kite from Broome and a Black-breasted Buzzard from Derby..

I haven't looked on here for weeks- amazing how I did when this thread was at the top! Here are a few of my favourites - whistling kite and black-shouldered kite. I really enjoyed looking at everyone else's photos. There are 3 kites here that I have never seen but would love to

cathshane

Got these Whistling Kites yesterday at the WTP, not the best shot as it was taken out of the car window. There were six of them, but number six took off before i could get a shot.

We went to the Western Treatment Plant, (near Werribee), We saw so many BOP, it was just awsome!!!!  But at least 12 Black-shouldered Kites. (if you want to go there , you have to contact Melbourne Water, you have to have a permit and a key to get in)

Also do you have any tips when is the best time to see birds? I try to wake up early to see them but I never do, I don't know if I wake up too early or too late, it's usually 6:00am, is that right?

Hi Tegan, where do you live? If we have some idea of where you are then we can give suggestions on what you can look out for and when.

Hey Kathie! (Can I call you that?) I live in Melbourne, Victoria, do you know anything I can look out for? What do you normally see?

Tegan - Melbourne Vic.

kathiemt
kathiemt's picture

We are carrying on a discussion on another thread but I can tell you I'm in the Dandenong Ranges and it depends on where you are in Melbourne as to what you might see. I'll see if I can send you a personal message where we can chat more, or perhaps we can start a new discussion asking about what birds are in the specific area in which you live.
