Bird ID

Hello Forum!

I am quite new in SE QLD and live in a very quiet area.  I work from home so I hear birds all day and slowly started identifying them.

This morning I heard one but couldn't find it on the trees as it seemed to be a bit far away... and it got me quite intrigued.

Unfortunately I couldn't record it but i'll try to describe it.  The first sound was quite long and going up... like weeeeeeeeeeeee and at the end it sounded like a laser shot... something like chwooo

so it was something like weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee chooow  (or a fancy sneeze)

Does this make any sense??  otherwise I'll try to record it next time I hear it.

Thanks!  :-)

I'm with Beef on this, my first thought , Eastern Whipbird, you described the sound so well, can only be that.

Thanks both!! :-)

I looked at it in youtube and it was in fact the sound I've heard!

Thanks for the factsheet as well!  It's great to learn about birds that sorround us.

Enjoy the whipbirds.  They are quite a common bird and often heard - but very difficult to see!  With persistence you should be able to see one though.  Also listen out for the female answer to the male's call.  It sounds a bit like "chi chi" and often follows immediately after the male's whip call.  Usually it consists of 2 "chi"s, but I have heard up to about 5 or 6 in quick succession.

WHY IS THE SITE ASKING ME TO fill in captchas just to post to the forum!?

The other one that I find sounds close to the whipbird is the Golden Whistler.

It doesn't have the same whip crack sound (or the answering female call), but it sounds a bit  similar to my way of thinking.

HI Soakes,

I think I found a video with the female answer as well.  Just as you described it

With many responses

Thanks so much for your feedback!  Loving learning about birds

It has in fact kind of a similar call... The one I heard is definately the Whipbird, but great to learn about another one :-)

Very good, and it demonstrates to me that the sounds, although recognisable, vary quite significantly across locations!

I thought Eastern Whipbird as well. The next time you hear the call the male I believe makes the first part of the call and the female finishes the melody. Your description of a fancy sneeze made me laugh because I have never heard one, but it makes sense.

This site soakes?

You need to use captchas to register for the website to try to cut down on the spam - though we have still had some sneak in. Have you been asked to do it on the forum specifically? It may be a new feature that web support are looking at.

just one remark, to throw you off a bit. I do have Whipbirds in the bush behind us, that's what made me think Whipbird.

But, here it comes, there has been one call exactly the same, one bird that makes the boy and girl call all at once, but a lot louder. My husband saw it a few days ago, we always knew there were some behind us, a " Lyrebird".

Now , is that cool or what??

Holly, it asks me almost "every time" to fill in those stupid numbers, so I do. It just makes it very slow to post.

haha, yes! that's true!  I saw them in youtube.  They can imitate anything!  I think they came with a recording chip embedded!  I've seen that video in the zoo where they 'playback' drilling machines.  Quite amazing!

haha, yes, I felt funny when I wrote it.... but I thought it was going to be very descriptive.   I never heard a fancy sneeze either, but I thought that's the way it should sound if it existed!  ;-)

This site soakes?

Yes.  I need to enter a captcha code every time I reply to a post (in some forums, not all?)

(In this case p4vrk).  The captcha only shows up after I submit the form the first time, then I fill it in and submit again.
