You wouldn't stick your head in a hole, would you??

I'm amazed how wide the wing span of a Galah is. I love No3, and the one styck in a holedevil Great photos.

No, I think he was muttering to himself, "Who put that bloody pot in my flight path? It wasn't there yesterday!" smiley

Thanks AdrianaBo, I used a Canon 5D MkII and a 400mm f2.8 lens for these pics from about 10 or 12 meters.

Sorry! That should have been 15 to 20 meters! It's farther than I thought!

These are the best galah photos I've seen!  :)

Thanks Tim and sacrednavel. That's very kind.

I am wondering about the eyes - one has red and the other has black. As a newbie to bird watching, does this indicate male/female/juvenile?

My daughter says yes.  Females have red eyes, and male the black.  Happy to be corrected on that though.  Outstanding photo's, beautifully sharp, I'm struggling to pick a favourite smiley

Tell your daughter, she is right. The male has a "brown iris", the female has a "red iris"

Thirty-four years ago we bought a captive-bred sulphur crested cockatoo chick from a reputable dealer. We wanted a male and he explained that the males have black eyes while the females have brown. We took him home and our children named him 'Cocky-Boy'.

When he was eight, 'Cocky-Boy' laid an egg! We don't know who got the biggest shock - him or us!

Right from the start she bonded with me and I could do anything I liked with her - yet she would nip my wife and daughters! She was the boss of the three dogs in her life and would even play tug-of-war with our cocker spaniel. He was so gentle that he would pull against her on a twig yet wouldn't pull her over; whereas with us and a rope he'd pull your arm out of its socket! I tried several times to get Cocky to fly but she much preferred walking and climbing. She flew a couple of times when startled but never really mastered landings! Ironic for a pilot to own a bird that didn't like flying!

Birds hide illness or injury as a self-preservation technique. She looked unwell in the morning but it was too late to save her and she died of a reproductive system complication at the vet's in the evening. It broke my heart - and I still get emotional when I mow around her grave. She was 33.

Great images Rolyd.  You would expect it with a Canon.   Nice detail and colour

Thanks, Keefsmit!

I love the Canon and its lenses - but I know of Nikon owners who swear by theirs too.

I've mainly been lazy, just sitting in our back yard and waiting for the birds - but I've got to start getting out there and hunting now! This is all very new - but I'm learning!

Ha! Ha! I wondered if we would get a comment!

Sony... Sony... don't they make cheap TVs and radios? devil

Well, my dear, judging by your photos they make a superb camera too!

Because I belong to a Photographic club, and we regularly dig each other about camera brands, isn't there any Nickhon members ?

Just a story: Only a few weeks ago I met about 7 members of a Photography club at my favourite lake. They had all the gear you could possibly have. They all carried huge backpacks, and tripods and at least two cameras dangling from their necks. I spotted Nikons and Canons, and huge lenses too. I walked past, headed straight for the new baby coots that were only two days old. In no time I had taken about 200 photos, put my Sony under my arm, ready to go home. The photography club was still putting up the tripods. When I walked past , one of the Canon people said to me: So, you are giving up already? He had a smirk and a touch of arrogance on his face .No, I replied, I have taken all the photos I possibly want. He still thought he could get me, when he said, can we have a look? Well, you should have seen his face, none of the club members had anything better to show. I was asked, how did you do that, why don’t you come on a Tuesday and join us? On my way to the car I heard some of them swear and say things like, where is the bird, and I can’t focus…… I had my photos in the can and they hadn’t even started yet. BTW, you’ve all seen some of the Baby Coot photos, taken with my SONY SLT-A77V, and my Sony 70-400mm G lens. O, forgot to say, I do not have Photoshop, my photos are what they are, I’m not even claiming that they are good either, I never brag…laugh You asked for it devil
