Feeding native birds: good or bad for their health? Study seeks helpers

Illawarra residents who feed native birds on the verandas are exactly the people wanted to help with a new study by Deakin University scientists, investigating the implications of so many people feeding birds.

It may harm their health, but it may also hold the secret to save our feathered friend from risk, so help is wanted for the Australian Bird Feeding and Watering Study.

Project leader Dr Gráinne Cleary, from Deakin’s Centre for Integrative Ecology, said it was still unclear whether bird feeders are having a negative impact and potentially a very serious one at that.

“We need the public to help us as we simply can’t be inside all the backyards in Australia,” she said.
