Students discover historic bird band

Two uni students have accidentally stumbled onto a significant historical find near Naracoorte.

LaTrobe University students Maeve Nunan and Mark Eacott were closely studying vegetation on a field trip at Deadman’s Swamp when by chance they discovered a very well hidden collection of bones.

On closer inspection, they found a bird monitoring band attached to the tibia bone of a bird.

LaTrobe PhD candidate Emmi Scherlis reported the find to the Australian Bird and Bat Banding Scheme, which confirmed the band had been attached to an eastern great egret by Max Waterman at Bool Lagoon on December 20, 1964.
