Summer Survey - Competition time!

Put on a sun hat, slap on the sunscreen and hydrate yourselves because it's time to take part in our Birds in Backyards Summer Survey 2019!

Once you have registered your free Birdata account, read the instructions or watch the video. Download the Birdata app and take your smartphone or tablet outside with you and just record all the birds you seen in your space in 20 mins. Alternatively you can submit a survey using the Birdata website. We are also offering an extra free online webinar to help you with setting up a Birdata account, how to use it and some basic information on bird ID'ing. Join us on January 28 at 7pm AEDST

How important are our birdbaths this summer?

We want to know! We need gardens that have a birdbath, and just as importantly, those that don't! We are going to look at how many birds are visiting these two types of gardens this summer - to see whether birdbaths really do attract more birds.

Your surveys matter

Not only are we looking at the importance of water this summer, we also know that birds are on the move, fleeing fires and droughts. We need everyone on the lookout for these birds, so please do a survey and tell us about what you are seeing - whether unusual or just the same old birds, all your data matters!

Congratulations to our prize winners!

Geri Doyle is our spring survey prize winner and will be receiving one of prize packs that contains backyard themed bird pins, a Birds in Backyards fridge magnet, and our nocturnal birds ID booklet.

Our main prize winner for the annual Birds in Backyards survey was Kieran McGrath who won a beautiful custom flock by the very talented Eggpicnic design and illustration duo, Camila De Gregorio and Christopher Macaluso. Eggpicnic is an illustration and design studio that produces fine art prints and toys to raise funds and awareness about wildlife conservation. Check out their fabulous work for yourselves!

More prizes up for grabs

It's not over yet folks, we are just getting started! This year we will be giving away one of prize packs for every quarterly survey.

For our summer survey it’s quite simple again – the more surveys you complete, the more chances you will have of winning! Our winner will be announced before our spring surveys start.

We will also be running our annual Birds in Backyards competition again. Starting this Summer, if you complete at least one survey per season (that’s Summer 2019/202, Autumn 2020, Winter 2020 & Spring 2020) you will go into the draw to win. The prize will be a brand-new pair of Nikon binoculars (worth $249) to take with you on all your birding adventures.

The not so fun but still important part: competition rules

  1. All surveys must be completed within the Birds in Backyards surveys on Birdata
  2. Surveys must be submitted from a single surveyor/Birdata account holder
  3. Surveys are only counted within each survey period
  4. For the Major Challenge, at least one survey in each season must be completed from a single Birdata account
  5. For Summer Survey, surveys can be from multiple sites

Birds in Backyards reserves the right to change the conditions of these competitions at any time. Updates for the autumn, winter and spring survey challenges will be coming soon.
