Bassian or Russet-tailed thrush?

Anyone got any ideas?

I couldn't pick a difference between them from my Simpson and Day.

Is the distinction of species a new one? As my (much older) Reader's Digest Complete Book of Aus Birds only shows one species, listed as White's thrush.

OK, got it to work - just needed to disable the rich text editor, and include it as an html link.

I do think though they are two different birds, in my books the Bassian Thrush is called- Zoothera lunalata, and the Russet-tailed Thrush is called- Zoothera heinei. But as so many birds are now considered one and the same species, they might be all called Bassian Thrushes??

Thanks Tim, looks like a Bassian Thrush to me.

Thanks M-L

My S&D has the same names, but the Reader's Digest has it as White's thrush (Zoothera dauma).

Morcombe certainly has them as 2 species. He has some useful notes to indicate the distinctions between them. The russet-tailed thrush has a more rufous general appearance than the Bassian thrush & this is more noticeable on the tail which is longer in the latter. The former also has a larger, more definitely white spot at the end of the outer tail feathers.
