Coastal Banksia birds

I was amazed to find the rainbow Lorikeets down by the beach on a beautiful clear day as they don't usually go so near to the sea around here.

very noisy little Brown HE that just love the banksias as do the Little wattle Birds

Love them Birdie. Plenty of Little Wattlebirds and Loris in our street but never seen the Brown HE

Cheers, Owen.

Not bad, not bad, not bad at all, birdie. I suspect the lorikeets will feed wherever there are Bansias & other favoured flowers but I was interested in your comment that the rainbow lorikeets don't usually go near the sea. BTW, is that Banksia integra the rainbow lorikeet is enjoying?

Well...thanks Woko and Owen , but I am afraid Woko, that i don't really know any botanical names LOL I just know that it is the variety that is blooming all over the coast at the moment and that the honey and nectar eating birds just love it! We have Lorikeets every where but not usually at the beach in the wind etc. Not that I have seen anyway.

Every shot a ripper. The Brown HE is, in my experience, the most difficult to shoot. We saw hundreds at Noosa but didn't get a single decent shot.

Beautiful shots, birdie.
You really seem to have mastered the new camera.
A decent SLR is still on the list of "sometime soon" purchases for me.

Hey thanks George, Tiimmo and mrT ...sadly there has been no new camera for me TImmo,..... still working with the same sad kit as before..sometimes conditions are just easier than others and this was one of those....the Banksias were like a drug for them, so they were oblivious to me :')
i was experimenting with fill flash in most of these and it really helped even though it was just the little on camera flash.

Birdie, I just got my lazy body out of my chair, got my Banksias, Waratahs & Grevilleas book from the shelf & found that it's Banksia integrifolia or Coast Banksia. Thanks for the prompt. They don't grow naturally in SA but there are a couple at Pt Elliot caravan park. The musk & rainbow lorikeets love them there, too, when they're in flower. And that's by the sea, by the way.

I love the little wattle bird! It looks as if someone put hair gel into it's feathers. It is so sharp, that you can see every detail of every single feather. Your photos are FANTASTIC !!! I hope one day I can take photos as good as this!? love them, Marie-Louise

George .... our coastal areas are teeming with BHE at the moment and they are so noisy.... my biggest problem is that my eyes are not good and they are so easily camouflaged that I can hear them chirping away but I am buggered if I can find them in amongst the banksia cones and foliage LOL

My mistake, I thought you had a new(ish) camera in the last year or 2. Shots look good anyway.
.
I was up at Burpengary at the CREEC environment centre last Sunday and there were lots of BHEs out around there too. There wasn't a huge number of trees at the front of the centre, but they seemed very happy just chirping away, feeding on the flowers in a few Melaleucas.
.
They do seem to be one of the more "noisy but hard to spot" birds around.

Araminta...you already do take shots as sharp as these , I like your Sony outfit the shots look good. The great thing about me getting out in Winter sun and away from the bush is that the apertures can be higher, thereby producing a sharper shot and the bright light means a higher shutter speed ..plus a monopod means my shaking hands don't matter LOL

Great pic's. Well you need a new camera now birdie. You have mastered the old one. Awesome.

NO new camera for me reckless.... just don't have the budget for that, but there is still a lot I can do to improve my shots with the gear that I have. I still have really bad days and it is usually because of my own mistakes ... soo that will ahve to be my aim for the near future anyway

Great shots Birdie, the camera looks like it's working fine from here.

Thanks Cathshane..... it does a good job for the price... I saw the kit advertised for $699 at WOW yesterday so you can't complain about that! I have a friend who was doing a project called 365 ( google it ...it is a lot of fun) and she started with a compact camera..... her work proved to me that with imagination anything is possible in the right situation :')

Just had a look at Project 365, it does look like fun, and you're right about the things that can be done with a bit of imagination. As for cameras i saw a nice lens the other day on sale for $7500 and Cath wouldn't let me have it! Of course i would have needed a new camera to go with it LOL.

Ha ha ha you had me going there for a moment when I read the email update...thinking ..oh no ...not another one upgrading ...poor me LOL
There is no doubt that a better lens will give you better results but you still have to deal with what you have ...and in my case I am stuck with it for the foreseeable future anyway :')

Great shots. Your brown honeyeater is cute. Is it a young one?

Beautiful shots - I love how the brilliant colour of the Lorikeets are contrasted against the banksia foliage - you have captured that wonderfully. The little Wattle bird looks a bit grumpy - but then that whole species is a bit bossy - how's that for anthropomorphism. I love the eye and feet detail on the BHE - impressive shots. Obviously the eye of the photographer is much more important than the equipment - not saying your equipment is not good just that I doubt more expensive equipment would do any better.

I'm shutting up now.

All the best ... Alison
