I went past my local pond this morning and took a few photos of ducks - so easy when they are tame

Very nice, Birdgirl. Even though they're tame it gives you an opportunity to hone your camera skills. They are all very sharp and well exposed.

Very good shots of the ducks. Have you seen the Australasian Shoveler at your local pond as they seem to have moved in the last few days from the swamp here.

Hi Smeedingo2 - I live in the Hunter too - I had a look in the pond this morning but did not see the Australasian shoveler - I will keep an eye out and post a photo if I see one.

Great shots Birdgirl, really sharp. Especially impressed with the second 'action' shot, no blurring on the wings at all.... how did you get that? I keep striving for a non-blurred action shot. I am starting a photography course next week so maybe I will get some tips there... I live in hope :)

Hev - I took them about 9:30 on a nice sunny morning. I think I used a shutter speed of 1/800 and an aperture of 3.7. I think I used an iso of 200 to allow me to use a higher shutter speed but not get too much noise. The bird was flapping around (probably having a bath) and I used burst mode to get several photos in quick succession. That was the best - I like the position of the body and wings.
I tried to freeze some birds of prey with a shutter speed of 1/500 and was disappointed in the blurry images. It's hard to get a fast enough shutter speed unless it is very bright.
