At Gould's Lagoon

Fair skies and fine weather for the past few days has changed my mood entirely - what a beautiful place Tasmania is - Miserable for eighty days then perfect the next! Sandra took rare time out from her busy schedule to accompany me to Gould's Lagoon, a wildlife sanctuary, a half hour drive north of Hobart.
.
This duck doesn't appear in my edition of S & D so I cannot put a name to it. Sandra thinks it might be a Muscovy or a relative thereof. Anyway, in preening itself it makes a pretty picture.

Yeah it's a Muscovy duck. In the last picture, the bird seems to be giving you a bit of eye! :lol

Hi Tark
Sandra and Gelmir have given you the right steer, re that one.
.
Have you checked the link to Waterfowl ID I posted on your previous posting re "Pacific Splashdown"?
It is perfect for you, as you are seeing lots of Ducks.
.
Cheers

Gelmir - it does indeed!

Hi Denis, yes, I had checked tall the links you gave in 'Splashdown' (even before you asked!) and just took another look to refresh my memory. But have to be honest and admit that damned if I could pick the difference between my 'Splashdown' images #1, 2, 4, and the Shoveler pictured in BiBY link ...id210 ... for me it will always remain academic. Unfortunately, my view of things has always been aesthetic which makes me a very poor observer of detail.

Hi Tark
I realised after I mentioned that link, that I had not checked the other site. Sure enough, you had gone there already. I find it really useful.
If only there was a similar site for Raptors, that would be great.
There used be really useful "Field Guides" to raptors and also to Ducks, which were available in the 1960s. Both were great. I think they were published by the Bird Observers Club (it became "of Victoria" and then went National. Not sure if these have ever made it to the Internet.
I am convinced that your 4th image is the Chestnut Teal, because of the beak shape. And you said it is the same bird as in the 3rd image anyway, which is perfectly lit and posed. A classic image.
So, don't worry any more about it.
Keep on taking good images.
Cheers
Denis

Denis - thanks mate ... I guess I'm primarily a photographer with a genuine and keen interest in birds rather than vice versa. I'll leave the ID bit to the likes of you guys and Sandra who is critically observant as women naturally are ... sometimes to our acute embarrassment.
