I had doubts whether I would ever see something like this

I had such a fantastic time in Aus filming as many species of parrots that I could point a lens at! Hard to believe that was 2 years ago now. I have had my sleeves up madly editing 45 hours of footage. But ITS DONE!!! It ended up with 50 species of parrots on 4 DVD's.

I had so much interest here when I came by to share about my adventures that I thought i would let folks know. I can now share with other parrot fans. Your welcome to have a look at my blog and preview of Australia - Discovering the World of Parrots. Let me know what you think!

Thanks for all the warm and encouraging comments throughout the process.

Cheers!

PS: Moderators please let me know if its not okay to share here about my doco. I searched forum etiquette and couldnt find anything. Thanks for your help

Tassie

the new parrot series look really impressive.
looks like a lot of hard work has gone into it but also the reward of seeing all those parrots.

Cheers, Owen.

Thanks for the great comments guys. I had a modest budget so its never going to rival ABC's Land of parrots in quality but I am hoping people enjoy it just for the sheer sake of seeing so many different species including rare ones like Princess and Scarlet-chested in the wild. You can go directly to a youtube preview here if you wish.

Holly thanks so much for confirming thats its okay to share about my adventure here. To Owen, Tassie and Birdie and anyone else I can honestly say its not so much about selling the end product (trying to recoupe a bit of the cost and stuff)but just sharing with others that get as excited as I do when talking about the beauty of parrots.

I mean you Aussies have a land that many of us in North America only dream about. I will never forget waking up in my tent and the absolute stark beauty of the Gibson desert with those gorgeous rolling red dunes all around me. Dead quiet with only the sound of breeze in the Casuarinas and some distant singing honeyeaters. No other breathing human being for 400 Kilmometres.

Then later in the pitch black at the end of a day of filming staring in unbelief at my video cam monitor watching what could be the only moving footage of wild princess parrots ever taken. I just kept staring at it in unbelief! I traveled several thousand miles and so many mates told me filming princess and Scarlet-chesteds was next to impossible. I guess God was with me on this one!

Sorry to babble on... I miss Aus and the beauty of it but its still fun to share with all of you.

Cheers!

No need to apologise for your passionate babbling here Don..... we all feel the same way I think. BTW I remember once being told by someone that they were on a bus trip across the Nullabor and a Swiss guy asked the driver to let him off and drive away. For him it was just about being the only human being within sight and sound in the middle of that vastness for the first time in his life ever! Over here we tend to forget that in places like Europe that feeling is rare :')

Thanks again for all the notes of encouragement. I am thinking now I should sit down and try to write a book or something about the adventures of making the film. Like the time a crazy mate of mine was poking a death adder in FNQ with a stick and me wide-eyed telling him that I didnt really need to see it up that close!

Then there was the time this large local bloke outside of a boarded up store in Lockhart River, FNQ started snarling at me without warning for spreading drugs all over his area. I just tried to be warm and said I was just a Canadian tourist. In a confrontational tone He replied.. Canadian? Oh you lot are the worst! Later I laughed my leg off about the whole bit.

Oh and having slept in my small tent for 6 months wanting to get a good nights sleep and finally falling asleep under a tree with several hundred fruit bats milling around at dusk. Then staring in unbelief in the morning as the tent was dolloped everywhere with fruit bat "gifts" drooling black fruity ooze down the roof of it everywhere...

But most of all I fell in love with a gorgeous land and one of the most cheerful lot of people I have ever met. While I was filming Little Lorikeets in a rural area of Windsor, NSW I chatted with this older retired lad while leaning on his fence. I said how much I would love to come and live in Aus. He just smiled warmly and after only having chatted with me for 30 min or so sincerely said... Ahhh we would love to have you mate! It doesnt get any better I figure.

Tons more adventures but no sense wearing everyone out with all of that..

Oh yeah and for those that purchased the doco I hope you will enjoy it even a minute bit as much as I did being out there in your gorgeous country living my dream of a lifetime. The dream of a little boy growing up in cold Canada who read about a gorgeous land where parrots are everywhere and there is no snow at Christmas and you can go to the beach... grin..

cheers!
