Lewin's

This bloke was getting spiders around the windows of our sun room this morning, got some shots of it in the next door neighbours grevilla. Almost certain it's a lewin's honeyeater.

I haven't taken any photos for about 4 years but seeing all the great pics in the forum here got me motivated to dig the camera out. I've taken a heap of pics today but these are the only 3 that are reasonable. Have some lovely shots of blobs in trees though :)

Lovely photos Triker, I think you are right, the "bue eyes" are pointing to a Levin's Honeyeater. Love your Grevillea, looks so healthy. What kind is it?( seeing I want to buy some on Saturday.I'm going to buy some Amber Passion and Ivanhoe)

Hi Araminta, it's the neighbours grevillea so I'm not really sure sorry. It could be a ned kelly, I'll ask Noel when I see him next.

Thanks John, ask Noel what kind of soil he has, as I have a lot of clay soil.(that's why we live in a Mud-brick House!)

Great shots.
I have plenty of grevillea's growing in clay soil, so don't worry.

Hi SerenityGate, Please, do tell, what are the ones that grow best? Last year was so wet, and I think, they got very wet feet!!!Which ones would you say can tollerate that? I had other trees die,but I didn't mind, they were the last European trees in my garden. I can do with some more advice, thank you!

Nice shots Triker. Marie-Louise we have around 30 differant Grevilleas in our garden and all are thriving in the wet, although our soil is sandy.

Hi Araminta. I've been working on my back shed the last couple of days so I haven't put any time into that plant list for you. It's still on my mind, tho'.

Hi Araminta,

Sorry to hijack you thread John, but here is a plant list for Araminta from the Southern Dandenongs Plant nursery [link=http://home.vicnet.net.au/~sdcn/SDCNPlantlistupdate106.pdf]plant list[/link] who grow indigenous plants for the Dandenongs. There is only one grevillea listed "Grevillea alpina" but I have had no problems growing others at Emerald - although the soil is more a clay loam than straight clay.

There were a lot of knowlegeable people in that group so you could drop them an email for advice for Gembrook at

. I know it is a bit far for you to travel to Belgrave.

Back on topic wonderful shot of that honeyeater, John .. I, for one, am glad you've decided to get the camera out again!

Awesome shots John. They are active birds and you've done well to get shots like these. Keep it up with the photography :)

Cheers, Owen.

Looks like you've got some reliable local information there, Araminta. I might stay in my back shed & let you follow up the community nursery.

Thanks everyone! Thanks Triker for the use of your thread!
And Woko, what do you do in the back shed? Do "they" feed you from time to time? M-L

Hi Araminta, spoke to the neighbour this morning and he has no idea what type it is, it was there when he bought the place. The soil around here is clay, so I guess grevillea's don't mind it.

Araminta, I'm fixing the leaky roof & putting some paving stones on the dirt floor if you must know. Ms Woko calls me from time to time, requesting that I fix her a meal.(Only joking.)

HaHaHa, Woko, tell you a quick story about feeding partners,(I know you'll like it). I went to the supermarket the other day, and bought a huge bone for the dog.Coming to the cash register, I said to the young girl: that'll make my husband happy for hours. She stared at me with eyes like dinner plates. She then asked: how do you cook it? I said:O no, he gets it raw,he chews on it for hours. But I won't let him come inside, because it makes him smell bad. That left the poor girl puzzled! On top of that, my husband turned up, to help with the bags, he saw the bone, and declared: O, I see, you got a bone for me!!!

Good yarn, Araminta. Those supermarkets could certainly do with some livening up.
Let's know how you go with plant species recommendations for your place will you?
