Someone puhleeze HIT ME!!! ...

I'm afraid I've totally lost it!
Got my bird lens back today -

The only reason the AF "wasn't working"
was that the AF / MF switch on the
underside of the lens had mysteriously
moved itself to the MF (manual Focus)
position when I braced it against a tree.
.
Doc has booked me for an brain Scan.

I know we should not laugh, but I can't help it....I also know how many time my AF malfunctions in the field!!!!....... because I have switched to MF and forgotten to switch back...Now lets see some great shots...

Ha Ha! Is this the same person that recommended the Olympus to me?

We shouldn't laugh but at last I am LMAO.

I was messing around with MF last night trying to get a night shot of the moon - and can see how your mistake could have been made.

I am no longer doubtful about MY big lens mate.

G'day Tark,
.
I must confess that I'm laughing too, although not at you, but with you. All of us have done this at some time. Neuron malfunctions are a part of post-21 life.... :-).
.
I look forward to seeing some perfctly focussed shots.
.
Cheers,

Thanks all for those cheerful and encouraging responses. Raoul; that graphic had me tumbling off my chair!
ed, glad to know that I'm not the only victim of such a dumb mistake but at least you discovered it before sending the lens for repair. Lyn, I am extremely relieved that it was "my AF" (Astonishing Foolishness) and not a defective lens'. Having recommended the camera to you I was feeling very uneasy at the possibility of your lens developing the same "malfunction" MATE!lmao George, thanks for the reassurance - you're right, too many defunct synapses in my buggered brain mate! Steve, I can't argue that conclusion! :)

This morning from my patio; a Grey Butcherbird caught in a willow web beneath a "white sky of death".

Not the exactly the best photo I've ever taken but a drought-breaker nonetheless - and the AF works fine!

Oh Tark - what a classic - you must have felt like a dill. It reminds me of the time someone at work organised a service call for an electrical appliance that wasn't working. THe service man discovered that the appliance wasn't turned on at the wall!

OMG, that is soooo funny..I nearly wet myself laughing!did they manage to keep a straight face when they told you and did you hear them break into raucous laughter as you went out the door?!!
I had a similar experience recently though not as publicly humiliating...
Thought I'd give manual focus a whirl as just finsished a camera course and the teacher was waxing lyrical about manual mode for bird shots.
Came back from walk with a card full of blurry fuzziness. Shrieking that lens doesn't work in manual mode it's got to go back to the shop to be repaired...him indoors(in soothing voice)take a picture and let me see what you're doing me(in high pitched voice that hurts your ears)What?you think I'm an IDIOT? that I haven't got it switched to manual or something? RIGHT! watch this and then this lens is going right back to the shop!
After observation..him indoors(with NO attempt to conceal smirk on face and amused tone in voice) It's not working because you are focusing with the zoom and not the focus ring

Use what talents you possess; the woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those that sang best

Congratulations Tark on having the [b]courage to admit what an idiot you've been on the forum!!!!![b]
Don't worry you wouldn't be the first to do something like that, and having worked in the camera service department I have no doubt that the laughter and scorn was loud and clear after your departure!!! :'D

Only today my husband boldly told me that when he borrowed my laptop something terrible happened and the wireless connect disappeared.

Of course, on further investigation I discovered he had flicked the wireless LAN switch accidentally when he picked up the laptop!!!
Thanks goodness your precious lens is fine and you are back out and shooting again

LMAO totally.

Cheers

ADMINISTRATOR: PLEASE DELETE THE UNEDITED POST ABOVE. THANKS MATE.

In conclusion to this thread:

Ed – Thanks mate, like a leader of an opposition I lost momentum! LOL
.
Birdgirl – Yeah, something like that. Sis!
.
heva1 - I don’t know whether they laughed as I went out the door but probably not – I’ve bought a bunch of camera gear from my dealer over many years – all he did was post the lens to Olympus au., Sydney. He probably made allowances for my tribal eldership!
But seriously, your teacher may have been onto something re manual focusing for bird shots. If you can recall my Superb Blue Fairy Wren post, those images were manually focused just a half hour after I thought my AF had “carked it” – they are arguably the sharpest pics I have ever taken with the lens in question. http://www.birdsinbackyards.net/forum/messages.cfm?threadid=419ED2D3-E8B8-2FBE-5DFC7BE9B93A2C9A
Anyway, your tale at least must equal mine and as for the brain scan the machine shot a lovely negative! :)
.
birdie - Indeed, such user errors are not uncommon and this was the 3nd almost fatal error I have made in my illustrious 45 year photographic career. As the hired photographer a bride on her dad’s arm was posing for me before walking down the aisle. The F/E indicator began flashing in the viewfinder of my Nikon F4 - the speedlight wasn’t working. I hastily switched flash to backup camera #2 only to have the same thing happen … PANIC!!! … the client was getting twitchy so feeling like a total idiot I went for my brand new Oly C-5050 digital (state of the art at the time) that I scarcely knew back from front but it saved my neck! Fortunately the ceremony was solemn and long (no pics allowed) giving me time enough to phone Sandra at home (10 km away) and asked her to bring me her Nikon F90 and another speedlight pronto – she arrived with them just in time for me shoot the exit. While I was shooting candids in front of the church, her forensic brain was examining my speedlight that had failed - she found the error in a switch that had somehow been set to manual instead of TTL that had prevented the F4 from working! Aaaaargh!!!!
And have I mentioned my American wedding , 2005, Dixon, Illinois when at the reheasal I dropped and smashed my Olympus digital on the church’s parquet floor … well, that’s another story but I did have backup cams. On that occasion it is unlikely that Sandra could have come to my rescue in time!
All I can say birdie is that when things go wrong you women have cooler heads than us mere males, don’t you agree! LOL

Thank you all!

Links are clickable on this forum.
I routinely provide clickable links to the BiBY site and even to other sections of this forum.
Use the square bracketsystem.
square bracket link square bracket link url square bracket /link square bracket
[ link ]url[/link] (no gaps - I had to type it with a gap, for the code to appear visible).
