A young bird must be able to manage to fly successfully on its first attempt, or it will crash to the ground. That's got to be a huge leap of faith in it's own ability.

Shorty, howd you manage to get a snipe out in the oopen like that. We have one around the dam next to my work and I can never see it before it flushes. It's always deep in the greass.

When the Snipe first arrive here they are quite shy but by November they settle down and we get them out in the open a lot. I have even seen one about 20 metres up a tree. Here is a link to an album on my FlickR with some of the many hundreds of shots i have taken.
