Can anyone recommend a good bird app for Australian birds? Preferably for Android :-)
The app we were using for the bird survey last week was excellent and I'd love to see something like that we could use every day for bird sightings and to track how many different species we'd actually seen.
I found one called birdeye but can't figure out how to make a list of birds I've seen. Thought I'd check to see what others might be using. Thanks.
I use the Michael Morcombe app but it costs $38. There is also the Pizzey and Knight app which costs even more at $50. They are both great with bird calls for almost every bird and a lot of information and good pictures. The Morcombe app also has nests and eggs for a lot of species which is a bonus.
Ok, thanks Tim. I'll have to wait till I have some $$. The birdseye one I mentioned seems good - just not sure how to use it. Have discovered that there are Australian birds they don't have in their library though so have been uploading images for them :-)

The apps Tim has mentioned are field guides- from what I read, you're after something to use to keep track of sightings.
I would recommend eremaea ebird. This is the system I use to keep track of all my sightings while making a contribution to science. You can upload sightings either online or through one of its many apps. http://ebird.org/content/australia/
There is another one, the BLA Atlas, but you don't get the great range of ways to access specific data like you do with ebird. So I wouldn't recommend Birdata, but just putting it out there as it does exist http://birdata.com.au/homecontent.do

Yes, that's right Ryu. Looking for something where I can track what birds of seen, where and how many. Thanks for letting me know. Is ebird for phone though? Looks like you have to login on their website to submit data.

I have been doing it through the website, but there are apps available. Looking at lists submitted in my local area, I have picked up 2 types of apps at least: "Submitted from BirdLog ANZ for Android v1.9.6" and "Submitted from eBird for iOS, version 1.1.3 Build 30"

lol, didn't you do the bird survey? That had a brilliant app and would be perfect for what I want to do but don't know that it's useable now the survey is over.

Hi kathie - no its not (it will open again before next year's count).
We will have a new portal and app for BIBY's Backyard Bird surveys next year as part of the BirdLife Australia Conservation Portal (were all BirdLife projects will sit). I dont have an ETA on it yet but it will be in the first half of next year (hopefully the first half of the first half! I am desperate for it!).
Holly, that app is such a good one. Would be good if they made that available for anyone here in Australia to use for any time - even if there is a cost to it. Might be worth their thinking about. I would love to track all the birds I see. I don't mean to send it anywhere, just for personal use.

The aim is for the BIBY one to not be any more complicated (with the exception of capturing garden data too) - and the backyard bird surveys are available year round, as opposed to the short sharp one off of the ABBC. I guess just having the ABBC available year round makes the event a bit less special (if you know what I mean).
If you are collecting data there is always a researcher who wants it Kathie :)
Yes, appreciate that about the event. Does this mean BIBY is developing one? I wasn't sure. I'm always happy to pass on information if I have an easy way of collecting it :-) Having a phone on me, as everyone does, is the natural way to do it.

I have the Morcombe app and you can keep a record of your sightings on it with Location, GPS location, time, date and a section for notes. It is a very handy app to have in your phone for many reasons.
