Hi,
I'm wondering if anyone wants to come with me on birding trips out to regional VIC national parks?
The first place I want to visit is Wyperfeld National Park. It's 4-5 hour drive from Melbourne and we might be able to see some Mallee Fowl! It would be 3 days or so, lots of bush walking to see as many birds as possible and camping at one of the campsites.
I want to do this soon! Let me know!
Also, if anyone has recommendations of NP's let me know (and how good the roads are for 2WDs).
Hi,I live in Stawell and I rarely get any further than the Littie Desert between Dimdoola and Nhil , threre are so many great spots along the way its just too hard to drive past them ,my wife is a sucker for blue wrens and robins so we usually spend a lot time chasing these, not that you have to look very hard .
Work commitments prevent me from doing more than day trips (working weekends really sucks ) we have said the next time we both had two days off at the same time (and weather permiting ) we would stay near lake Hinmarsh and tour the surrounding area
Wiperfeild NP is very popular with Horsham bird watchers most of the roads are reported to be pretty good , if it says 4wd only trust them they mean it !
Locals who know where Mallee Fowl can be found can be rather secretive about them ,not that I blame them ,still worth asking around you never know !
good luck Cheers

Hi Sparrow,
Yeah I really want to do Little Desert NP too. I've heared there are two sealed roads through it, is that true? I'm finding the ParksVic site to be lacking in road condition information :(.
Sometimes people post on eremaea when they see the Mallee Fowl, but that's a good tip about the locals :).
There's a sealed road in from Dimboola but most of the roads are gravel and in pretty good nick considering the traffic going through the park, as you get further off the main road and along the river the roads are sand and can give you a fright if your looking out the window and not paying attention , I drive a Honda CRV but would take the wifes elantra on 80% of the park roads that I have been on , we have only done a fraction of the park , we keep going back to the same places , if you use a GPS and put in the location from eremaea you might get lucky and find a mound being used , other birders might be more open ,there's plenty of other bird life around.
It sounds wonderful. I love exploring new places. Thanks for the info about the roads, I miss the 4WDs I drove in the Kimberley, I didn't have to worry so much about road conditions then!
Hopefully I can find an exploring buddy :)
