A Cracker Weekend in the Lockyer Valley

Went to the Lockyer Valley with Reflex and another very passionate local birder.

I managed to get 12 new species of birds!!! smileysmileysmiley

New species were Pink-Eared Duck, Red-Rumped Parrot, Brown Falcon, Black Falcon, Cockateil, Weebill, Hoary-Headed Grebe, White-Throated Honeyeater, Red-Kneed Dotterel, Yellow-Rumped Thornbill, Jacky Winter & Spotted Harrier.

We spotted 8 different types of Rapters as well. White-Bellied Seaeagle (Juvi), Brown & Black Falcons, Whistling Kite, Black Kite, Spotted Harrier, Nankeen Kestrel & Black-Shouldered Kite.

At one stage we had about 200-300 Black Kites circling above going higher and higher like a swarm of bees. Then a Black Falcon and 2 Brown Falcons joined them. I've never seen anything like it. I tried to take some photos but only had the big lens on and it didn't even remotly do it justice.

Here are some of the more decent photos I managed to get. Some of the new birds were either too far away or I didn't get a decent shot worth showing.

Sorry its so photo heavy.

Pink-Eared Duck

Female Rufous Whistler

White-Throated Honeyeater

Yellow-Rumped Thornbill

Black-Shouldered Kite

Jacky Winter

Some particularly good shots there Devon. The Australian Pipit and the Striped Honeyeaters are both magnificent photographs.

Great set. Agree with Reflex and I'll add Pale Headed Rosella to the list.

Lots of great photos there Devster and congrats on your big haul of new sightings - many would be new ones for me.

Along with the photos mentioned by the other posters, I really like your two raptor shots - neither of which i have seen. That black kite is a beautiful looking bird. I would also enjoy seeing  a shot of the mass of black kites if you can post one. Must have been quite a spectacle.

The jacky winter is a cute little bird, quite confident little ones too.

Wonderful set of photos Devster!

Love the Pipit, just gorgeous and the Black Kite is pretty special as well.

Probably needs a touch more canvas on the RHS winkwink

 LOL!

I agree with Rick and I'd be interested to see it with a little less contrast on the bird itself?cheeky

To the Gatton colledge and a few of the dams out that way.

I was a passenger so I really found it hard to keep track of where we were.
