Esk week

This week has been interesting , especially monday and wednesday with a Black Falcon hunting Galahs and various pigeon species around here. Beautiful to see , they fly by so fast.

On monday it [l think a female] , was disturbing Galahs across the road. lt chased one , and it flew erratically this way and that , zig-zagging wildly and calling for all its worth. lts mates , about 8 other Galahs , were flying and circling too and squawking and screeching much.

The falcon pursued the galah for 15seconds or so , the galah gaining freedom by literally dropping out of the sky , tumbling toward earth , wings flailing , then gaining composure metres above the ground and flying nonchalantly away! Was amazing to see.

Small 'flocks' of king Parrot are flying around lately. Maybe preparing to move elsewhere? do they migrate?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The little Collared Sparrowhawk is still around. the small birds here give it hell almost every morning.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On the overcast mornings , and only on those mornings , Eastern Whipbirds have been calling from the heavy brush behind the shack. l like their calls very much.

A new little family of Double Bar Finches has arrived as of late. the young fledged about 2 weeks ago.

Notably , the Red backed and Variegated wrens have been keeping a low profile , possibly because of two Pied Butcherbirds having moved in lately?

Over and out for now,

Barney.

I don't know if they migrate but I know that many species of birds are vagrants, moving about in search of food. I've seen huge flocks of finches in the past that appeared and stayed for a few months and then one day they all disappeared.

For Australian birds, natives=life, exotics=death, so do them a favour and go plant some natives and save their lives.
