Can any one work out what this bird is that was eating our grapes ?
I initially thought it was a female fig bird as we have a resident male who makes a lot of noise and is seen quite often. However, the more curved beak and lack of red eyes make me wonder.
Is it perhaps a juvenile Red Wattle Bird as we have quite a few of them around as well. But the beak looks a bit heavy and the speckled markings cover more of the body.
Image quality is not too good as it was taken with a hand held 500mm lens and has been cropped to about 1/8 - I couldn't get any closer before it flew away - but I hope someone can work out what it is.![]()
Location: Maitland NSW.
Any suggestions welcome.
Cheers,
Geoff

I think you are right in thinking it's a" female Figbird". There is a blue ring around the eye, and no white tips on the tail, like the Wattlebirds have.

The pattern on the edge of the wings and the stripes on the chest look like in a femalse Figbirds too.
