This evening for the first time ever I heard a Koel at our place, 20 km northof bathurst. We have been here 23 years. I guess it is bad news for the local Magpies.

Going on the distribution map for the Common Koel in Morcombe's field guide I'm surprised to learn this is your first hearing of a Koel where you live, Greg.
Before Bathurst I lived in the upper Blue Mts,never heard a Koel there either. This is the first time I have heard a Koel anywhere in the central tablelands, definitely never heard one west of the Mountains. They are on the move.
Bad news for Red Wattle Birds as well and bad news for you if they decide to roost and call from a nearby tree - they start about 3am !!
