Just letting anyone whose interested know that I heard a Koel this afternoon, first one of the season for me, in SE Qld.
Havent heard a channel-bill yet.
Cheers.

Cool!
I'll have to keep my ears pricked for them - they're one of the iconic sounds of summer I reckon.
Cheers

Not heard in Sydney (well here anyway!) so far, so they are moving south, any day now I guess. Nothing from Channel Bill Cuckoo either.
I saw four birds on the week-end that I thought were Channel Bill Cuckoo's but thought it was too early for them, plus I've never seen four together at the same time in a group so not sure whether they actually were CBC's

Thank you for the interest.
I have for many years taken note of when I first hear the Koel and CBC (being a keen birder that I am), and it seems to me the CBC are running a little late this year.
In 2009 I heard first CBC on 8 September, and in 2010 I noted I heard one on 4 September, then again on 8 Sept. So I wonder where they are?
We are supposed to be getting some warmer weather this weekend so maybe that will bring them down a bit this way, I hope so as I eagerly await their call every September.
Thanks for letting us know, Scorpios. I haven't heard any this season but have been waiting for them.
Reflex, I've seen groups of six CBCs, so that fact that you saw four birds doesn't mean that they weren't CBCs.
Andy.
Due to the revised Gillard governments border protection policy the Koel is running a little late this year.
Immigration process for the Koel and Channel Bill Cuckoo are taking longer than expected, however, once their "visitors visa" has been stamped they will arrive in due course.
Much to the discourse of our local bird population who are looking to advanced security measures to protect their nests from the unauthorised deposit of eggs!
I live in Brisbane and have not heard a koel at all - think it might be something to do with the crazy summer weather last - year , floods, cyclones. Always koels around by now. In other news my husband heard a CBC in the middle of the night a few nights ago.
I am really missing them all.
I saw four CBC's together again on Saturday morning and they were close enough for me to have a good look at them. Haven't seen a Koel this year yet though. We have some Brazilian Cherries that grow as a hedge around our water tanks and they always attract the Koels but they aren't fruiting yet so maybe once they fruit the Koels will turn up.
I did come across a Crimson Honeyeater the other day (first time I've ever seen one)and managed to get some good shots. I'll have to revise how to post a photo.

Both Koels and CBCs are definitely on the coast.... yay

Heard my first Common Koel for the first time this morning (Sat 08 Oct) just after 0615 calling in the distance. So they are in Sydney! Welcome Koel's!
Hi, I heard an odd sounding bird over the last few days and our neighbours also talked about it calling from 4.30am.
After a bit of research and finding a soundbite I can confirm it was a Common Koel, first one I have heard or seen in Seven Hills area of Sydney in 27 years. After doing more research I guess having a fig tree in fruit may have helped attract it.
I did see the gloss black male and I think I saw a mottled female amongst the branches.
The Common Koel comes to Sydney each year from around late Sep to March and there used to be a regular male that occupied the pine tree in the churchyard here for many years. He hasn't been the past two years now. If you have binoculars check out the lovely bright red eyes of the male.
On a summers night they will call all through the night, some people think they are owls but not so.
I heard my first Koel at my place this morning.
Summer's here! (Even if it's not really).
Cheers
